Internship: Allyn has a seven-month news gathering operations internship with ABC News in New York, New York, rotating between the departments of news acquisition, live streaming, logistics and field engineering. In her role, she assists in coordinating production resources to help producers and clients tell stories.
How HPU helped you get there: “HPU’s critical emphasis on hands-on learning within practical settings helped me get here. Since my freshman year, I’ve had access to top-tier TV studio equipment that allows me to explore a variety of practices, like on-air anchoring, and develop production-based skills. HPU makes technology within the broadcast industry accessible. I have made a point to utilize and take advantage of many Office of Career and Professional Development events and services as a student. Their office has always been there for me—from putting together the best ‘creative resumes’ for the communications industry to prepping me for my interviews and teaching me how to make sure my applications were polished before submitting.”
Most impactful mentor at HPU: “Benita Van Winkle, associate professor of visual arts, has been an avid supporter and mentor of mine. She opened my eyes to new opportunities and ways that my love for photography and journalism truly connect, and she challenged me to grow my skill set. She also instilled in me the confidence to pursue my aspirations while encouraging me to reach higher. I am so fortunate to have a professor like her in my corner.”
What has your internship experience been like, and how is it preparing you for your future?: “My internship experience has been phenomenal and provided me great insight into the broadcast industry and what it’s like at such a high level. I have had the opportunity to learn about live streaming and digital news broadcast, which is a major development for how audiences and media consumers experience content today. I know my internship is helping to build on the foundation that HPU provided and allowing me to continue growing as a young journalist.”
