Name: Amy Fos
Hometown: Stillwater, Minnesota
Major: Exercise science and psychology
Post-graduation plans: Fos is pursuing her Doctor of Occupational Therapy at the Murphy Deming College of Health Sciences within Mary Baldwin University in Fishersville, Virginia.
How HPU helped you get there: “High Point University helped me by fostering life skills and emphasizing the importance of showing up for your future. I use the life skills I learned and developed at HPU every day. These life skills continue to make me a better future practitioner. I utilized the Office of Career and Professional Development for my resume and the mock interview services. This made me feel calm and collected for my graduate school interviews as well as mock interviews with patients.”
Most impactful mentor at HPU: “My most impactful mentors were Dr. Colin Carriker and Dr. Roger Vaughan, associate professors of exercise science, and Dr. Tony Kemmerly, professor of exercise science. I didn’t know at the time, but these professors set me on track to be a thoughtful and thorough occupational therapist. I am thankful for the wisdom and knowledge they imparted to me.”
How has HPU’s inspiring environment contributed to your success? “I don’t think I would be where I am today without HPU’s encouraging environment. The sky was the limit and set me ahead of my cohort in ways I never knew I could reach. You just need to advocate for yourself and make known what you want do with your life.”
What are the life skills HPU helped you develop that prepared you for long-term success? “Communication and leadership skills are things I learned at HPU that I continue to use every single day. These skills have set me apart from my cohort and make me stand out.”
What are the values and virtues HPU’s campus helped you develop that you will take with you? “Two of the values I took away from HPU are learning the importance of always making a connection and how to market myself.”
Advice for underclassmen: “Learn from your mentors. Whether they are your advisor or someone else, listen to them and continue to grow with their knowledge. They want to guide you in the best way possible.”
