Here’s a glimpse at one extraordinary member of the Class of 2023:
Name: Will Rawlings
Hometown: Jamestown, North Carolina
Major: M.A. in strategic communication
Post-graduation plans: Rawlings will attend the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill to pursue a Ph.D. in media and communication.
How HPU helped you get there:
“HPU provided me with the opportunities through the Office of Undergraduate Research and Creative Works to develop my research during my time as an undergraduate. I had the opportunity to present my research at a national health communication conference, and I conducted undergraduate research with multiple professors during my time at HPU. I also visited the Office of Career and Professional Development as soon as I got to HPU and met with Dr. Doug Hall, vice president of Career and Professional Development. He gave me invaluable advice on how to find internships and prepare for graduate school.”
Most impactful mentor at HPU:
“My most impactful mentor at HPU is Dr. Sarah Vaala, associate professor of strategic communication. Dr. Vaala was my research mentor for over three years and my thesis chair. She taught me virtually everything I know about communication research methodology and is a kind and supportive person. It was a joy to have her as my mentor, and I would not be where I am now without her guidance.”
Most impactful moment at HPU:
“My most impactful moment at HPU was attending the Kentucky Conference on Health Communication ,where I presented my research to academics and researchers from across the country.”
What are the life skills HPU helped you develop that prepared you for long-term success?
“Through SuRI (Summer Research Institute), I developed skills as a researcher. Also, by working as a tutor and supplemental instructor for strategic communication through the Office of Academic Services, I was able to develop the pedagogical skills that set me apart from other Ph.D. candidates.”
Advice for underclassmen:
“Don’t be afraid to ask your professors if they have research projects you can work with them on. And don’t hesitate to reach out or visit professors during their office hours. They are invaluable resources in and out of the classroom.”
