Guidelines for Reserve Materials
Faculty may place the following materials on Reserve: Library books; personal books, tests, study guides, etc.; textbooks; copies of articles; copies of portions of a book; student-authored papers.
The following materials cannot be placed on Reserve: Materials from other libraries (i.e. Interlibrary Loan); Professor-created anthologies. For more information, see the Course Reserves section in the policy handbook.
In support of the law school’s program of legal education, Kahn Law Library maintains course reserves in print and electronic form. Print reserves are held at the circulation desk; they may be checked out for four hours at a time and only used within the library building. Articles and other documents are scanned and made available electronically as Adobe PDFs.

Reserve Request Form
Research Assistance and Document Retrieval
The librarians are happy to assist with a specific research project or question. Please use this form or email us at [email protected] to submit your request.
As a service to faculty and other patrons, the library is happy to provide a scan of selected pages of a document by email, subject to copyright limitations. Alternatively, give us a call at 336-841-2625 to submit your request.
The library can also conduct non-litigation related research for patrons and can set up alerts on behalf of patrons or provide monitoring of dockets and other legal developments as a service to faculty. Similarly, the library can provide current awareness service in any area of law.
Research Training
From time to time the library will provide training resources on research skills for patrons. Patrons and faculty can also request librarians to provide training on how to use specific law-related databases. Use this form to submit a request for training on any aspect of legal research. Library staff are unable to assist with ongoing litigation, cannot provide legal advice or service, or assist with the completion of legal forms. The library provides a LibGuide Databases A-Z list on various legal resources to guide patrons.
Faculty can request that the law librarians request books and articles via interlibrary loan on their behalf. Simply call or email either of us or submit an Ask a Librarian form.
If you have found resources in your research that you need access to but are not available through us or HPU Libraries, you can also follow the ILL process laid out below, and the law library will fulfill the request and deliver materials to you.
Interlibrary Loan
You can make ILL requests and check their status by logging into your HPUShare account.
If you know you need a particular resource and it is not coming up in a catalog search, expand your search to “Libraries Worldwide” in the lefthand menu.

When you find the book or article, click it in the list, then lick “Request from Libraries Worldwide: Interlibrary Loan” to the right.

This will bring you to the request form, with most of the information from the resource already filled in.

Enter a deadline to receive the item if it is urgent, enter your department and pickup location (Kahn Law Library) and click Submit.
Renewing ILLs:
- How can an ILL item be renewed?
Log into your HPUShare account, find the item you want to renew and click on the renew button located to the right of the selected item.
When can a renewal be requested?
Renewal requests can only be submitted one week or less before the due date. This gives the lending library enough time to process the request and complete the renewal. If the due date has passed and you still want to renew, contact [email protected]. A renewal request will be sent to the lending library from the ILL office.
- What if the request is denied?
If a renewal is denied, another ILL request for the same item can be submitted through HPUShare. Keep in mind that ILL books can take between 1 and 3 weeks to arrive.
