Frequently Asked Questions

Here we have attempted to provide answers to the most common questions about the law library and our services and resources. If your question is not answered here, please Ask a Librarian using our contact form.

Where is the law library?

The third floor of the Kenneth F. Kahn School of Law, located on the west side of campus at the end of Qubein Ave.

What are your hours?

The current space is open to law school patrons 24/7. Summer 2026 circulation desk hours are Monday-Friday, 7:00 am – 5:00 pm. The law library will be closed Monday, May 25 and Friday, July 3 in accordance with High Point University’s holiday schedule.

Is the law library only for law students?

Our core mission is to serve the program of legal education at Kenneth F. Kahn School of Law. As such, the law library is primarily focused on serving the needs of the law school faculty, staff, and students. However, other members of the High Point University community who have legal research questions can contact the librarians to request research assistance or set up a reference appointment and will be admitted to the library for those appointments. Please see the terms for contacting the library here. The law library is also open to members of the High Point Bar during the hours of 8:00 am to 5:00 pm.

What is the library’s food policy?

No food is permitted in the law library. Drinks are allowed in spill-proof cups.

How do I access Westlaw and Lexis?

Those login pages can be found here and here, respectively. Use your student login and password created at the beginning of your first fall semester. If you do not know your login or are having trouble getting logged in, please email [email protected]. For future easy access, both login pages are linked on our home page under Quick Links.

How do I see what other resources the library has?

A selection of legal databases, sorted by jurisdiction, can be found on this page. Our reference resources are collected on this page. You can view our entire A-Z list of legal and interdisciplinary resources here. You can search the entire catalog for books, ebooks, journal articles, and more at the top of our home page here, and a guide to navigating the catalog can be found here.

Does the catalog show everything I have access to through the law library?

No, it does not. Because we share the catalog with the larger HPU community, certain resources provided by the law library to only law students do not show up in a catalog search. These resources are findable in the A-Z list by filtering “Access Mode” for “Kahn Law School Community.” They include Westlaw, Lexis, West Academic Study Aids Collection, and CALI, as well as other resources through Westlaw and Lexis.

Can I check out books, or is everything in-library use only?

Great question! We have a small circulating (check-out-able) collection; look for spine labels that begin with “LAW” or “NC” (but not “NC REF”).

In the first column of shelves immediately to your left upon entry, is the reserve collection. These can be checked out, but only for four hours at a time and still used within the library only. The checkout is to reserve the book for your own use for that time period.

All other books are reference materials and can be perused within the library only. If you take any book off the shelf, please return it to the reshelving cart near the central desk or beside the reserve shelf rather than returning it to the shelf yourself. We track use of library materials and can’t track if we don’t know what was used!

I can’t find a resource (book, ebook, article, journal, database) that I need. What do I do next?

If you have double-checked the catalog and cannot find the resource, you have two options. The first one is to expand your catalog search to “Libraries Worldwide” with the checkbox in the upper left corner. When you find the resource, you can request it through Interlibrary Loan. Learn more on this page.

The other option, especially for a book or ebook, is to request that the library purchase it. You can also use the “Libraries Worldwide” search to get as much information as you can about the resource, then fill out this form to suggest it to the library. We will get back to you within 2 business days about whether we will purchase it or not.
