Kahn Law Library seeks to provide students with the resources they need to conduct basic and complex legal research into a variety of topics. The databases, websites, and other resources gathered on this page represent good starting points, including essentials like Westlaw and Lexis, as well as more specific resources grouped by jurisdiction. Aspen Learning Library

Online library of quality study aids in ebook format, as well as audio and video content.

Black’s Law Dictionary

The standard authority for legal definitions since 1891.

CALI (Center for Computer-Assisted Legal Instruction)

A library of over 1,300 interactive legal tutorials written by law professors and geared towards law students, as well as casebooks and other legal education material. Kahn Law Library patrons, please email [email protected] for your registration link.

Cardiff Index to Legal Abbreviations

A way to find the meaning of domestic, comparative, or international legal terminologies and abbreviations, including the preferred and alternative abbreviations and jurisdiction information.

FastCase

Access to cases at the federal and state levels, either by searching a phrase, i.e., “admissibility of evidence”; a citation (in proper Bluebook format); or the case name, using quotation marks.

HeinOnline

A premier legal documents collection, HeinOnline also includes audio transcripts of Supreme Court cases, legislative histories, articles from law reviews, and fulltext linking to case law using Fastcase.

Law Journal Library

More than 2,800 law and law-related periodicals featuring subjects such as criminal justice, political science, technology, human rights, and more. Coverage for all journals is from inception and goes through the most currently published issues allowed based on contracts with publishers.

LegalTrac

Provides indexing for more than 1,200 major law reviews, legal newspapers, specialty publications, Bar Association journals, and international legal journals, including more than 200 titles in full text. The database offers coverage of federal and state cases, laws and regulations, legal practice and taxation, as well as British Commonwealth, European Union, and international law.

Lexis+

LexisNexis is a full text research system for legal materials, including cases, statutes, regulations, and news.

LII / Legal Information Institute

Developed by Cornell University, LII/Legal Information Institute is a not-for-profit organization that provides open access to primary state and federal legal materials as well as links to a wide array of US and international legal reference websites. Contents include access to WEX, a free online legal encyclopedia.

West Academic Study Aids Collection

The West Academic Study Aids Collection is an online subscription-based service that provides electronic access to hundreds of study aids, written by noted law school professors, that cover virtually every law school course. To set up your account, click “Create an account,” enter your information including your HPU email, and choose High Point University School of Law from the institution dropdown menu.

Westlaw

Westlaw is a research platform for primary sources of law: federal and state statutes, cases and administrative regulations. It also has a strong library of secondary sources of law and practice materials.

Code of Federal Regulations

The codified general and permanent rules and regulations published in the Federal Register.

Congressional Record Daily

The daily edition of Congressional Record is a report of each day’s proceedings in Congress.

Core U.S. Government Resources

These resources are vital sources of information about the workings and essential activities of the U.S. Government.

Early American Case Law

Coverage of cases from the late 1700s-1920s, including the entire Federal Cases 30-book series (1894-1897). Also includes the Trinity Series (American Decisions, American Reports, and American State Reports).

Federal Register

The daily publication of the rules, proposed rules, and notices of Federal agencies and organizations, along with executive orders.

Military Legal Resources

Contains publications produced by the JAG on military justice, war crimes, and international law. Also contains rare 19th century works on military law and justice and the complete works of Colonel William Winthrop.

Oyez

Oyez (pronounced OH-yay)—a free law project from Cornell’s Legal Information Institute (LII), Justia, and Chicago-Kent College of Law—is a multimedia archive devoted to making the Supreme Court of the United States accessible to everyone. It is the most complete and authoritative source for all of the Court’s audio since the installation of a recording system in October 1955.

Supreme Court of the United States

This is the official website of the U.S. Supreme Court. Coverage includes the Court calendar, docket information, bar admission information, court rules, slip opinions, and oral arguments. Oral arguments and slip opinions are archived back to 2008.

U.S. Code

The codification by subject matter of the general and permanent laws of the United States, divided by broad subjects into 53 titles.

U.S. Copyright Office

The Copyright Office provides online access to copyright records, resources for registering a new copyright, and transfer of copyright interest.

U.S. Courts

Information on federal judicial officers, court forms, and court records.

U.S. Federal Legislative History

Includes comprehensive federal legislative histories published by the U.S. GPO and private publishers, as well as a finding aid based on Nancy Johnson’s award-winning work, Sources of Compiled Legislative Histories.

U.S. Patent and Trademark Office

Patents, trademarks, and intellectual property research.

U.S. Presidential Library

Messages and papers of the presidents, daily and weekly compilations of presidential documents, public papers of the presidents, documents relating to impeachment, Title 3 of the CFR, and other related works.

U.S. Statutes at Large

Complete coverage of the Statutes at Large, featuring every law, public and private, ever enacted by Congress. Also includes early federal codes and compilations of statutes, as well as other related works.

National Center for State Courts

Resources for and by state courts to improve access and efficiency.

North Carolina Administrative Code

Regulations (also known as rules) of North Carolina administrative agencies.

North Carolina General Assembly

Source of North Carolina legislative history resources, North Carolina session law and historical newspapers. Particular attention should be paid to the Bills & Laws page.

North Carolina General Statutes

Search the entire full text collection of North Carolina General Statutes by keyword, citation lookup, or by browsing the Table of Contents by chapter.

North Carolina Register

The North Carolina Register is published twice monthly and contains information relating to agency rulemaking, executive orders, and other notices required by or affecting Chapter 150B of the General Statutes.

Supreme Court and Court of Appeals of North Carolina Reports

Publishes the opinions of the Supreme Court and Court of Appeals in three forms: slip opinions, advance sheets, and print and PDF volumes.

Municode

Municode is the largest private, online publisher of local laws, and it provides access to ordinances from all fifty states. Note, however, that not every county or municipality is included in its online database.

American Legal Publishing

American Legal is a private company that publishes codes of ordinances and provides online access for a variety of U.S. states—over half of the fifty states. Browse ordinances by a county or municipality’s table of contents or search using keywords. If you cannot find a North Carolina county listed in Municode, it is likely to be found on American Legal.

British and Irish Legal Information Institute

British and Irish case law & legislation, European Union case law, Law Commission reports, and other law-related British and Irish material.

English Reports 1220-1867

World Trade Organization – Documents and Resources

Official documents of the WTO’s councils and committees, as well as a range of other resources, such as trade statistics, economic research, WTO publications, videos, audio and photos. Here you can also find the “legal texts” — the body of WTO agreements that collectively form the legal framework of the WTO.
