About Bryan
What is your title and how long have you been at HPU Libraries?
I currently serve as the Multimedia Librarian at HPU Libraries, and this is my 10th year at HPU.
What does a typical day look like for you, or what do people think you do vs what you actually do?
It really depends on the day. On some days I will be at the Media Services Desk all day working on projects (ordering new items for the collection, researching new items for our Makerspace, etc.) or some days I will be teaching classes, going to meetings, and lots of other things. I can definitely say that I do a lot more than just sit behind a desk all day long handing out materials and shushing people, which some people may still think is what librarians do. It’s definitely a lot more than most people would expect, I think.
Your Work
What part of your work feels the most meaningful to you?
Anytime that I get to interact with patrons is meaningful. Anytime I get to show patrons where to find quality research materials or recommending movies or video games for checkout, talking to people is definitely the most meaningful part of my work as a librarian. Anytime I get to see someone have that “aha!” moment and use what we discuss to succeed on a project, that is the best feeling in the world to me.
What is something about your role that most people might not realize?
How much work goes into the job that we do here at the university. Not only do we need to be educated on the tools and resources available to help patrons be successful on projects, but we have to be up to date on all of the latest technologies and subjects related to librarianship. Being a librarian is all about being able to adapt, and that takes A LOT of work.
What is one project or accomplishment you are particularly proud of?
The Fall 2025 Haunted Library. That was an idea that I had been developing for several years, and we were finally able to offer it last year. It was a GREAT way to flip everyone’s perception of what a library can be on it’s head, and it was a lot of fun to see people have fun being scared while trying to find books and use skills that we teach in the classrooms to win the game. It is also one of our most successful events, with over 70 people turning out to play the game.
The Human Side
What is your favorite spot in any HPU Libraries space and why?
I really like the Powell Room, because it is nice and quiet, and it is really interesting to look at our rare book collection. It’s honestly a really relaxing and productive space.
Coffee, tea, or something else?
My go to is definite Coca-Cola, although I do really enjoy a cup of hot tea from time-to-time.
What is something on your desk or in your workspace that says a lot about you?
My candy bowl; I definitely want patrons to feel encouraged to come up to me and start a conversation when they come to the library, and feel a real sense of welcoming (I also just love candy XD)
What is a skill you have that is not in your job description?
I definitely pride myself on my skill of filing up a coffee machine.
Library Culture
What is a library resource or service you love that more people should know about?
I think our Triad Academic Library Association (TALA) borrowing agreement is really amazing. The fact that I can borrow books from library collections at schools close by is REALLY helpful, especially if I am in a hurry and can’t find what I need at our library. It really makes me feel supported as a researcher and librarian.
If you could magically add one thing to the library, what would it be?
Ever since we began offering video games and video game consoles at the library, I have been trying to figure out how to add a gaming lab to our makerspace. I think having a space where people can come to play video games or even make them would just be really cool!
Just for Fun
Favorite book, movie, or album right now?
I’m a huge fan of horror movies and I really enjoyed the newest Scream film; I know it has had mixed reviews but I thought the choices were smart and the story was just great overall!
A book you love but rarely get to recommend?
I love a great ghost story, especially ones that come from North Carolina. I would highly recommend Boogers and boo-daddies: the best of Blair’s ghost stories if you want some good local frights!
One fun fact about you that surprises people?
I think the fact that I play video games, watch horror movies, collect Pokémon cards, and go skydiving always surprises people. I also just got my first tattoo that mimics an old-style library book stamp that says “Not to be removed from the library”, which I think is pretty cool.
If you see Bryan at Media Services, say hello!
