Impacted by Sexual Harassment

What is sexual harassment?

Sexual Harassment is conduct of a sexual nature or based on sex, that satisfies one or more of the following:

  1. Unwelcome conduct determined by a reasonable person to be so severe, pervasive and objectively offensive that it unreasonably interferes with an individual’s functioning or creates an intimidating, hostile, or abusive working or learning environment.
  2. An employee of the University conditioning the provision of an aid, benefit, or service of the University on an individual’s participation in unwelcome sexual conduct.

Sexual Harassment includes:

Behavior that is not limited to personal interactions but can include acts that occur over the phone, social media, the internet and other forms of communication.

Examples include but are not limited to:

  • Comments (either oral or written, including electronic correspondence and social media) of a sexual nature which normally will not include matters appropriate to discuss as part of university academic activity such as courses, seminars, and lectures.
  • Touching, hugging or patting a person’s body;
  • Requests of a sexual nature as a term or condition of employment or academic status;
  • related requests for dates after refusal;
  • Rape or other sexual assault;
  • Sexual propositions, invitations, solicitations, or flirtations
  • Questions, jokes, or stories of a sexual nature;
  • Disparaging remarks, gestures related to sexual activity, experience, gender, or sexual orientation.

What can you do?

If you want to report right away or speak with Confidential Resources, there are options for how you decide to move forward.

Report using the Title IX/Sexual Misconduct Student Report Form. This is different than making a Formal Complaint or starting a formal grievance process.

Report to your Community Director, Resident Assistant for immediate support.

Report to University Security/Police.

*Note: If you are comfortable, ask the person to stop. Write down everything including: what happened, dates and times, what exactly was said or done, who said/did it, and any witnesses who were there. Include as much detail as possible, and keep notes about every time it happens or happened. If it happens again, write down the details while the memory is fresh. Save any emails, texts, letters, or messages about the harassment, or between you and the harasser. Gather them in one place, at home, on a personal email account, or in another safe place not at work. These notes will be helpful if you decide to report in the future. Talk to a lawyer.

You decide what happens next!

  • If you choose to report the incident to the University, the Title IX Coordinator will reach out to you to schedule a meeting. This meeting will explain all the support that might be available in your circumstances. You are not obligated to file a formal grievance to access these supports.
  • The formal complaint process will also be explained to you. You will decide if you would like to move forward with a formal complaint.
