High Point University’s (HPU) AmeriCorps VISTA program hosts 5 members—4 VISTAs and 1 VISTA leader—dedicated to improving education and food security in the City of High Point. VISTAs have been integral to HPU’s efforts since 2014, working both on and off campus to alleviate poverty through strategic partnerships with local nonprofits and schools.

The program recruits VISTAs with diverse skills in areas such as marketing, communications, fundraising, community-building, and project development. VISTAs will work in education, tackling key initiatives such as developing materials for education nonprofits, recruiting tutors and food security for Title I schools, expanding after-school advocacy programs, and a major focus on capacity building and sustainability for organizations.

VISTAs are provided housing in HPU-maintained properties, a year-round 14-meal dining plan, and additional in-service benefits through the Corporation for National and Community Service. Throughout their service year, VISTAs engage in professional development, weekly team meetings, and community-building activities, while HPU supports some conference travel to enhance their growth.

The program offers a unique opportunity for individuals interested in education, food security, community development, nonprofit management, or public administration. By the end of their service, VISTAs will have concrete experiences, leadership wins, and strong professional networks, preparing them for the next step in their careers.
