HPU’s newest cohort of students represents a wide variety of academic achievement, service, backgrounds, cultures and geographic locations. GR Dulac is the Freshman Class President for the Class of 2019. Below, discover how he plans to make the most out of his time at HPU:
Name: GR Dulac
Hometown: Grosse Pointe Farms, Michigan
High school attended: University of Detroit Jesuit High School in Detroit, Michigan
Accomplishments: In high school, Dulac played three varsity sports: tennis, cross country and track. He also started a small tennis racket stringing business that he ran out of his home. Outside of athletics, Dulac was involved in musical theater, choir and forensics speaking in high school. He served on the Planning Team of Michigan Youth Leadership (MYLead), a nonprofit leadership organization whose mission is to motivate and enable the youth of Michigan to make a positive impact on their communities through leadership and service. Dulac has over 300 hours of volunteer service in the past year through working with MYLead, tutoring students in the Detroit Public School System, teaching tennis, leading religious retreats at his high school, and with his local youth group. Currently, Dulac is volunteering with “I Believe in High Point,” a project aiming to capture the stories of High Point citizens’ love for their city by interviewing community members at events around the area.
At HPU, Dulac is the Freshman Class President. During his first semester as President, Dulac was able to present and pass a bill through SGA to bring to fruition a popular dining option on campus; now, a footlong sub from Subway counts as a Magic Meal. He is also on the club tennis team, a member of the Freshman Student Leadership Team, part of the Research Rookies program, and will be going on Alternative Spring Break in Haiti next semester.
Major: Nonprofit Leadership an Management
Why you chose HPU: “One of my stops on a college tour road trip across the eastern United States was High Point University. Although I still had a few more schools to visit, from when I first stepped foot on High Point’s campus I knew that this would be the place for me. Ranging from the classical music flowing from the promenade, to many connections and opportunities constantly arising, to the cutting-edge building used as a student success center, I truly believe in the extraordinary education that Dr. Qubein pushes as the mantra at this university. Along with the wonderful amenities and connections, I was looking for a small school with a nonprofit-focused major. After meeting one of my major’s professors at my academic orientation, I knew I had made the right choice. The faculty and administration really care and want to help me succeed, and they always find ways to make that happen.”
What you’re looking forward to at HPU: “I look forward to all the possibilities that HPU has opened up for me and to all the connections that I’ve yet to but will make. Besides making personal connections, it is my goal to find a way to make a positive impact on the lives of as many people at this school as I can. As freshman class president, I hope to accomplish this through having service and recreational events that help bring the freshman class together and help bring unity and school spirit to our class. I want to increase the level of school spirit we have and show others why we love being here at HPU.”
