Name: Tom Bermel
Hometown: Garden City, New York
Major: Biology with a minor in psychology
Post-graduation plans: Bermel is working in Charlotte, North Carolina, as a junior sales executive at Randox. He develops business relationships with current customers as well as with new customers.
How HPU helped you get there: “HPU gave me several valuable skills I needed to enter my career. The faculty and staff in the Wanek School of Natural Sciences and the Office of Career and Professional Development provided support and guidance to prepare for interviews and to network with alumni. My professors helped challenge me intellectually, but also pushed me to strive for success and achieve my goals.”
Most impactful mentor at HPU: “One of my mentors was Emily Long, senior career advisor in the Office of Career and Professional Development. She was extremely supportive when guiding me on my career path. She helped me build my resume and cover letter when it came time to search for jobs in the medical industry. Another impactful mentor was Dr. Keir Fogarty, assistant professor of chemistry. I did research with him during my junior year, and he helped me improve my critical thinking and presentation skills, while also developing my passion for microscopic cell culture.”
How has HPU’s inspiring environment contributed to your success? “The beautiful atmosphere of campus motivated me to find my passion in science. I enjoyed taking classes at the Wanek School of Natural Sciences because of the state-of-the-art laboratories and the amazing support from faculty. It also allowed me to forge connections with faculty and students who shared the same interests.”
What are the life skills HPU helped you develop that prepared you for long-term success? “HPU taught me to embrace my growth mindset by taking charge of my own learning. The university helped me develop my leadership and presentation skills which are vital to a career in medical sales. It also helped me understand how I can tackle problems and create solutions.”
Advice for underclassmen: “Find activities and things that you enjoy, and you will find people with the same interests you have. Take part in all of the unique opportunities the campus has to offer whether it is a speaker or a workshop through the Office of Career and Professional Development. Utilize the skills HPU teaches you at 1924 PRIME and Alo because they will benefit you in the professional world. All of these things will help you to grow as a person and thrive at this wonderful institution.”
