HPU graduates are leading prestigious career paths around the world at Fortune 500 companies, international service programs, public school systems, top-tier law, medical and graduate school programs, and many other esteemed organizations thanks to their journey at HPU. Here’s a glimpse at one extraordinary member of the Class of 2023:
Name: Sophia Gregory
Hometown: Camp Hill, Pennsylvania
Major: Chemistry
Post-graduation plans: Gregory will be attending the University of Notre Dame in Notre Dame, Indiana, to pursue a Ph.D. in chemistry.
How HPU helped you get there:
“HPU allowed me to do research as early as possible, which showed me I love working in the laboratory. This led me to pursue a doctoral program in chemistry and eventually work in the industry. Without my mentorship and experience in Dr. Meghan Blackledge’s synthesis laboratory, I would not be in this position. Additionally, the coursework taught by the rest of HPU’s Department of Chemistry allowed me to be well-prepared to enter a doctoral program. I also visited the Office of Career and Professional Development for help with my resume and CV when applying to summer research programs and graduate school.”
Most impactful mentor at HPU:
“Dr. Meghan Blackledge, associate professor of chemistry, was my most impactful mentor. My experience in her synthetic research laboratory allowed me to gain knowledge and skills in various methodologies and instruments to be prepared for a Ph.D. program. I had many independent experiences which gave me confidence in my laboratory skills I would not have otherwise. I am so grateful for her mentorship and support.”
Most impactful moment at HPU:
“My most impactful moment at HPU was participating in SuRPS 2021, one of HPU’s Summer Research Programs. This experience showed me that I wanted to pursue a Ph.D. in chemistry and continue conducting research as a career.”
How has HPU’s inspiring environment contributed to your success?
“The Wanek School of Natural Sciences is an amazing academic building with access to instrumentation that makes research engaging and inspiring to complete. There have been many days and nights I spent studying in ‘The Hive,’ a collaboration lab/study space, or in a classroom on the fourth floor.”
What are the life skills HPU helped you develop that prepared you for long-term success?
“HPU allowed me to attend many national conferences where I was able to network and make connections in the field, which has been so valuable as a young scientist. I have been exposed to areas of chemistry I never would have been able to otherwise and gained invaluable knowledge. Through presentations at HPU and the SuRPS program, I have been able to advance my research and presentation skills. I also met professors at various universities and hear about their research.”
Advice for underclassmen:
“Take advantage of everything HPU has to offer. We are fortunate for everything we have access to as students!”
