International Student FAQ Pre-Arrival

Acceptance & Orientation

For fall applicants, you’ll hear by June 1. For spring applicants, you’ll hear by December 1.

Billing statements will be sent via email once accommodations are assigned—by August for fall term and year-long programs and December for spring terms. All balances must be paid within 10 business days of receiving billing statement. Payment can be directly wired to High Point University; may be made in person by cash, personal or certified check, money order, or credit card; or may be made online to the Student Account Center. Refer to your Payment Options memo in your Pre-Arrival Checklist for more information.

Your acceptance letter will give you the dates of arrival as well as the dates of orientation. We recommend that you arrive the day before orientation begins and stay in a local hotel (the recommended hotel will be in your pre-arrival materials), as orientation will begin early the next morning. An Office of Study Abroad member will greet you at the Piedmont Triad International Airport (GSO) upon your arrival the day before orientation, and will help you secure an airport shuttle to a nearby hotel.

The morning of orientation, HPU will provide a shuttle service from the recommended hotel to the HPU campus.

If you choose to arrive on another date or to another airport (e.g., the Charlotte-Douglass International Airport (CLT) or the Raleigh-Durham International Airport (RDU)), you’ll need to plan for transportation to either the recommended hotel or to campus the morning of orientation.

You will be asked to provide your travel itinerary information and request shuttles in your pre-arrival materials sent to you via email after you’ve been accepted to study at HPU.

On official University holidays, HPU provides complimentary airport shuttles to and from the Piedmont Triad International Airport (GSO), the Charlotte-Douglass International Airport (CLT), or the Raleigh-Durham International Airport (RDU), the High Point Amtrak Station, and the High Point Greyhound Station.

Orientation begins early on day one with checking in to your residence hall and picking up important documents, such as your HPU student ID card. You will want to plan to arrive to Greensboro the night prior to orientation so that you can attend all parts of orientation. Students staying in the recommended hotel will be provided a shuttle to campus for orientation.

During the first day of orientation, the Office of Study Abroad will provide transportation to Wal-Mart, a large discount department store where you will find everything that you need to make yourself at home in your dorm room.

During the next couple days, you will receive an orientation to the HPU campus and will be introduced to the campus facilities, staff, and student activities. You’ll meet with Peer Assisted Learning Services to discuss the U.S. classroom culture, policies, and procedures, and will meet with other students to learn more about being a successful college student at High Point University.

In short, Yes. Per North Carolina law, all students must be enrolled in a comprehensive insurance plan in order to be enrolled in classes at HPU. As such, all students will be enrolled automatically in the HPU health insurance policy. Once enrolled, the policy premiums will be billed to your student account.

Students who have secured their own insurance can request a waiver from the HPU plan. Download the International Student Insurance Waiver, complete the requested information, and submit to the Office of Student Accounts using the instructions on the form.

Because a college education represents a substantial investment of both time and money, HPU offers a Tuition Protection Plan which provides coverage for tuition, fees, room, and board paid to HPU by a student who suffers a serious illness or accident and has to leave the university before the semester is complete. This plan provides coverage of up to 75% of the fees paid to HPU, depending on when the withdrawal occurs. The cost of the plan for the 2020-2021 academic year will be $174 per semester or $348 per year.

All undergraduate students, including study abroad students, are automatically enrolled in this tuition insurance program unless they complete the waiver to opt out online.

Note: Exchange students are not enrolled in this tuition protection plan.

You will be required to submit a Health Form, but are not required to have a physical, as only the immunization records need to be filled out by your physician. You must, however, have a TB test (Tuberculosis) that has been administered and read within the past 12 months before coming to High Point University. If you are unable to have the test in your home country, please let us know and we will work with the Student Health Center to arrange for you to have it completed during the first week of classes.
