Development of Silver Nanoparticles as a Therapy for Neurofibromin 1 Deficient Peripheral Nerve Sheath Tumors
Author(s): Garrett Alewine, Bashnona Attiah, Adithya Ghantae, Christina Mamrega, Jerrica Knight, Robert Coover, and Cale Fahrenholtz, High Point University
Mentor: Cale Fahrenholtz, Basic Pharmaceutical Sciences
Neurofibromatosis Type 1 (NF1) is the most common neurogenic disorder. NF1 patients are likely to develop peripheral nerve sheath tumors (PNSTs) which can be deadly. Current standard of care for PNSTs show heterogeneous responses. Here we provide evidence that silver nanoparticles show cancer-selective cytotoxicity in cell models of NF1-associated PNSTs.

How Has Exposure to Non-Suicidal Self Injury Changed During COVID-19?: An Analysis of the Frequency and Source of Exposure to NSSI Pre and Post Pandemic.
Author(s): Kelly Scheidel and Brianna Colangelo, High Point University
Mentor: Laura Nagy, Psychology
The purpose of the present study was to investigate how exposure to nonsuicidal self-injury has changed from before and after the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. Results showed no significant differences in general exposure to NSSI pre- to post-pandemic; however, certain sources of exposure did vary significantly.

More Than Words: Do patients of diverse backgrounds choose different words to describe their pain?
Author(s): Elizabeth Ragan, Lauren Dinkla, Amanda Heafey, and Kaitlynn Cooper, High Point University
Mentor: Alicia Emerson and Garrett Naze, Physical Therapy
Chronic musculoskeletal pain is a distinctive and personal experience. Cultural background, language, and gender influences pain perception. It’s important for clinicians to understand how a patient’s primary language can influence pain description. The purpose of this study is to explore differences in pain descriptors chosen by English and Spanish-speaking patients.

Structural Expansion of a Novel Antibiotic Adjuvant Scaffold to Improve Aqueous Solubility and Biological Activity
Author(s): Sophia Gregory and Ashley King, High Point University
Mentor: Meghan Blackledge, Chemistry
Current antibiotics are no longer useful treatments against resistant bacteria. Our lab is developing antibiotic adjuvants that could potentiate existing antibiotics. We identified a novel carbazole-based scaffold that potentiates the activity of ß-lactams in MRSA. N-alkylation of our lead compound was explored. Synthetic methodologies and biological data will be presented.

All the Daughters and Brothers of Her Father’s House: Viola’s Melancholic Tensions from Living with
Conditional Identities
Author(s): Josiah Williams and Laura Alexander, High Point University
Mentor: Laura Alexander, English
Viola’s identity is central in William Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night because she moves between the masculine and feminine. Two film adaptations, by John Sichel (1969) and Trevor Nunn (1996), depict this internal and external process. I will characterize Viola’s movement using the psychanalytic discourse from Sigmund Freud’s Mourning and Melancholia.
