Dean Mark Martin Appointed to AI Advisory Board

thumbnail IMG 0211Dean Mark Martin—founding dean of High Point University’s Kenneth F. Kahn School of Law and former Chief Justice of the North Carolina Supreme Court—has been appointed to the AI and the Future of Legal Practice (AIFLP) Advisory Board, a national initiative led by the Thomson Reuters Institute.

His appointment comes as generative AI rapidly shifts from experimentation to everyday legal use, raising urgent questions around competence, ethics, and accountability. The AIFLP Advisory Board brings together leaders from legal education, the judiciary, private practice, and AI governance to help guide how the profession responds.

Research from Thomson Reuters shows the pace of change: 41% of law firm attorneys report using generative AI, with many expecting it to become central to legal workflows within the next three to five years.

As a board member, Dean Martin will contribute to research and guidance across four priority areas:

  • Legal education and talent development
  • Ethics, professional competence, and accountability
  • Governance, risk management, and client counseling
  • Access to justice and service delivery

A central focus of this work is ensuring lawyers are equipped not only with technical skills, but with the human capabilities AI cannot replace—sound judgment, critical thinking, and careful verification of AI outputs.

Dean Martin emphasized that as AI becomes more integrated into legal practice, maintaining trust, ethical responsibility, and rigorous analysis will be essential. At the same time, he noted AI’s potential to expand access to justice by making legal services more accessible and understandable.

His appointment reinforces the vital role of legal education in shaping a responsible, future-ready profession.
