ABA Standard 510 Student Complaint Policy
The Kenneth F. Kahn School of Law (School of Law) at High Point University must comply with the American Bar Association (ABA) Standards for Approval of Law Schools, which are publicly available on the ABA Standards webpage, found here: https://www.americanbar.org/groups/legal_education/resources/standards/.
This policy applies to prospective, current, and former students who would like to file a complaint that might implicate the School of Law’s compliance with ABA Standards. Students wishing to file such a complaint must complete the Student Complaint Form Regarding ABA Standard 510, which is available on the School of Law webpage here. The complaint must include the following:
- The name(s) of the individual(s) involved, along with the relevant date(s), time, location, and a detailed description of the circumstances.
- The complainant’s signature and the date of submission.
The Dean of Students will acknowledge receipt of the complaint within five (5) business days by email or personal delivery.
The Dean of Students will determine if the alleged facts in the complaint implicate the School of Law’s compliance with the Standards even if a specific Standard is not cited in the complaint.
If the complaint implicates a Standard, the Dean of Students or a designee will, within fourteen (14) business days after acknowledging the complaint, respond in writing or in person by either:
- Providing a substantive response to the complaint; or
- Outlining the next steps to address or investigate the matter.
If additional investigation is required, a substantive response or status update will be provided within fourteen (14) business days of completing the investigation.
The student may appeal the response of the Dean of Students (or the designee) to the Office of the Law Dean. The appeal must be emailed to [email protected] with “Student Complaint Appeal” as the subject line.
- The appeal must be within 14 business days from the date of the student’s receipt of the substantive response to the complaint.
- Any decision made on appeal by the Law Dean is final.
The Dean of Students and the Director of Administration of the School of Law will maintain a confidential record of any complaint implicating the Standards, a summary of the process, and the resolution for ten (10) years or until the next regular comprehensive review by the ABA Council.
The School of Law will not retaliate against any person who files a complaint under this policy.
