Library IRL: Meet Nita Williams, Circulation Librarian

Library IRL is a monthly series that highlights the people behind the books, spaces, and services at HPU Libraries. Each feature offers a closer look at one member of our team, sharing insight into their work, interests, and the many ways they support students, faculty, and campus life. It is a chance to show the real people behind the library and tell the stories that do not always fit neatly into job titles or service descriptions.

This month, we are featuring Nita Williams!

About Nita

What is your title and how long have you been at HPU Libraries?
I am the Circulation Librarian, and I have been here 38 and a half years.

What does a typical day look like for you, or what do people think you do vs what you actually do?
Most patrons think we are just checking out books all day, but there is so much more involved. I answer questions about overdue items, help people find where a book is located, troubleshoot printing issues, fulfill hold requests, remove old requests, fulfill syllabi requests, place items on reserve, extend due dates, flag staff accounts for people who no longer work here, answer directional questions, work with student assistants, and handle numerous other duties that pop up.

The Work

What part of your work feels the most meaningful to you?
Providing assistance to our library patrons is truly rewarding. If I can make their day a little easier by helping them print materials, locate a book, or simply offering a listening ear, then I consider that a meaningful success.

What is something about your role that most people might not realize?
I am like a detective. I’m solving why the printer is not working, where the missing book is, whether your professor put something on reserve or if it is a book you need to look up, and even whether you meant to call the public library or Smith Library.

What is one project or accomplishment you are particularly proud of?
I am particularly proud of the strong rapport I’ve built with my student assistants. They are the backbone of our library, and I strive to ensure they feel valued, supported, and genuinely cared for in their roles.

The Human Side

What is your favorite spot in any HPU Libraries space and why?
My favorite spot is my office. It is my home away from home, a place where I feel comfortable, focused, and connected.

Coffee, tea, or something else?
Coca Cola and sweet iced or hot tea!

What is something on your desk or in your workspace that says a lot about you?
I love my family and my fur babies.

What is a skill you have that is not in your job description?
One skill I have that is not in my job description is sewing. I have been able to use this skill to assist students when they have sewing questions, offering guidance and support when needed.

Library Culture

What is a library resource or service you love that more people should know about?
The library’s My Account feature. You can renew books, check your hold requests, and also see your borrowing history.

If you could magically add one thing to the library, what would it be?
Lockers for our commuting students.

Just for Fun

Favorite book, movie, or album right now?
I am looking forward to the latest Scream movie to be released in February.

A book you love but rarely get to recommend?
I love the juvenile book Elvira by Margaret Shannon. She doesn’t like to fight or eat princesses. It’s a sweet story about being different and finding your own identity, showing kids that it’s okay not to fit stereotypes, even if you are a dragon!

If your job had a theme song, what would it be?
Lean On Me.

One fun fact about you that surprises people?
I love horror movies. It takes a lot to scare me.
