Emotional Intelligence (EQ) for Students
Beginning in the 2026–2027 academic year, High Point University anticipates launching a series of student‑centered initiatives aligned with the goals of the Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) focused on Emotional Intelligence (EQ). These efforts are designed to strengthen learning, engagement, and personal development across the undergraduate experience.
A Phased Rollout
The 2026–2027 academic year marks the start of the phased rollout period. During this time, the QEP Director and Co-Director will work with campus partners to refine programming, assess needs, and plan the long‑range efforts that will extend throughout the 10‑year QEP cycle. Students can expect updates as new components are reviewed and approved.
Foundational Learning Opportunities
During the rollout phase, HPU anticipates introducing EQ‑focused learning opportunities that help students build awareness of their emotions, understand the emotions of others, and develop strategies for managing relationships and communication effectively. These experiences are currently in development may be integrated into early academic coursework and first‑year programming.
Course‑Embedded Experiences
As part of the QEP’s long‑term vision, certain courses—particularly those taken during the first year—may include activities designed to explore core EQ competencies such as self‑regulation, collaboration, and communication. These anticipated activities could take the form of reflective exercises, team‑based work, or structured discussions that encourage the application of EQ skills in academic contexts.
Campus Engagement Opportunities
Students may also begin encountering EQ‑aligned programming through campus partners such as student organizations, academic support units, wellness programs, and other co‑curricular experiences. These offerings are expected to evolve over time as the QEP Director & Co-Director, faculty, and staff collaborate on next‑step planning.
Future Pathways for Deeper Development
As the QEP continues through its approval and implementation phases, HPU plans to explore additional opportunities for students to deepen their EQ learning. These may include workshops, applied experiences, or structured opportunities for independent skill development. Any future enhancements will be shared as they are formally approved.
