Using an AED

Automated External Defibrillators

High Point University and its Safety & Protection Technology Department are committed to the health and safety of its students, staff, faculty and visitors.  Thanks to technological improvements and lower costs, automated external defibrillators (AEDs) may now be safely acquired, installed and used by University departments to save victims of sudden cardiac arrest.  An AED is used to urgently diagnose and treat ventricular fibrillation.  An AED is attached to a victim’s chest to assess the heart’s rhythm.  If appropriate, the device will recommend that a shock be delivered to resume a safe rhythm for the victim’s heart.  When delivered, a metered electrical charge restores the heart’s functionality and often saves the victim’s life.

AEDs are most successful when their first shock is delivered within three to four minutes of sudden cardiac arrest onset.  Because of this, Safety & Protection Technology has installed AEDs in accessible and visible locations throughout campus and continually expands the program.  Because of their ease of use and built-in safeguards, untrained bystanders have successfully used an AED (but they are intended for use by trained personnel).

Department AED Procurement:

Departments interested in an AED for their space should complete this form.  Departments are requested to fund the acquisition of the AED unless capital funds exist.  The Safety & Protection Technology Department will maintain the equipment including monthly inspection and routine maintenance.

Fast action is important in a sudden cardiac event. When someone passes out, is not breathing, or appears to be having a heart attack, moments make the difference between life and death.

High Point University maintains a large collection of AEDs (automated external defibrillators) placed strategically throughout campus. In addition to high-traffic buildings, every security vehicle is AED-equipped.

How to Use an AED:til web aed trainer

  • Check to make sure the scene is safe to approach.
  • Is the person breathing? Is there a pulse? If no, get the AED and have someone CALL 911 or 336-841-9111.
  • Make sure the patient is not in a wet area; move them to a dry area.
  • Expose the person’s chest and remove any jewelry. You may need to remove a bra on a patient.
  • Put the adhesive pads on the person’s chest (the AED diagrams where to place each pad).
  • Press the analyze button on the AED and move away from the patient while the AED scans for vital signs.
  • If a shock is advised, STAY CLEAR of the patient and have others back away too.
  • Press the SHOCK button.
  • Start of resume CPR and stay with the patient until EMS arrives.

Most of the AEDs on campus are fully automatic. If a shock is advised, the machine will deliver the shock without requiring you to press any buttons. Follow all voice prompts on the AED.
