The Revlon Girl Primary Characters & Descriptions
SIAN – Late twenties, bright, hopeful, and eager to help, Sian is very much the instigator (and defender) of the evening’s event and is desperate for it to go well. She’s described as a peacemaker who is always laughing nervously and is an over-anxious people-pleaser. Sian was a mother of one of the mothers who lost a child.
THE REVLON GIRL – Around the same age as Sian (if not younger), Revlon is smart, well-groomed, well-bred, trusting and clearly does not come from a Welsh working-class mining village. She’s a cosmetics representative from Bristol who has come to give the women beauty tips, though she initially doesn’t understand the full context of why she’s been invited.
MARILYN – Early to mid-thirties, Marilyn is introverted, tense and fearful of change. Though outwardly simple, she is very focused. She’s one of the grieving mothers struggling with the aftermath of losing her child.
RONA – Early to mid-thirties, Rona is fiery, foul-mouthed, and indomitable. She finds strength in rage, rejects authority, and is easily set alight. She’s described as being obsessed with getting accountability from the government and coal board for their failures regarding the disaster. She lost a child as well.
JEAN – Early to mid-thirties, Jean is stately, conservative, and sociable. Though she hails from the same background as Marilyn and Rona, Jean is now the wife of a respected church minister and therefore regards herself as a pillar of the community. She’s currently pregnant and struggling with complex feelings about her new child versus the one she lost.
There’s also JACKIE, who appears to be an off-stage character (heard as a voice) who gives orders to the other characters.

Resources
Please prepare a 60 second audition package including one musical theater song, (with sheet music for live accompanist) and one Contemporary monologue. You may present your pieces in any order.
It’s always a solid choice to look up other works by the composer and lyricist team and see if there are any good songs for your voice. This is a marvelous opportunity to use AI. “Musicals by Jerry Herman with solo for leading man”. If you can’t find anything that seems right for you, then choose a song from the same time period OR the musical style. You might also consider listening to the songs of the character you are interested in auditioning for, specifically, and ask Chat GPT or Perplexity what other songs might work. Regardless, try to choose a song that is right in your wheelhouse as a singer, vocally. You can nail every note, you understand the character, and you WANT to sing this song.
Also consider this HPU resource – Musical Theater Songs Search from over 11,000 musical theater songs, many of them hard to find. Find the perfect song for an audition, show or class by entering voice, mood, key, range and many other criteria. Sheet music is available at numerous resources, but Musicnotes is a great place to start.
