Theater Student-Produced Works

Every year we make 3-4 slots available for students to produce their own work. This can be original work or a reading or production of an existing work. The students manage all aspects of this from proposing and presenting their idea to the Department, holding auditions and casting their pieces, collaborating with other students for stage management, lighting and sound design, and making their show art and programs. It is a wonderful opportunity to try to do something on their own and our students often say it is some of the most meaningful and memorable work they do while at HPU.

STAGES
This show is a staged reading of Lani Skelley’s original piece about young adults battling cancer. We see each character face their harsh reality and how they each handle their circumstance in their own ways. The show moves in moments that ultimately come together at the end. As I read this script, I felt how real and honest Lani’s words were and knew I wanted others to hear this message. After watching my younger sister, Lauren, battle Leukemia in 2010, telling the stories of young cancer patients has been something I’m very passionate about. Before the show, we plan on having a philanthropic table with my nonprofit organization, Love Like Lauren, to spread awareness about pediatric and young adult cancer. We will also be having a toy drive to donate to pediatric cancer patients at Levine’s Childrens Hospital in Charlotte (the same hospital where my sister was treated).
Directed by Lani Skelley, Production Manager for the Department of Theater and Dance
