We’ve finished our Top 10 #MyMajorAtHPU Countdown but we still have 37 majors to go! The #11-15 majors at High Point University include graphic design, electronic media production, journalism, international business and biology with a concentration in health science.

 

 

 

 


#11: Graphic Design

graphicdesignThose interested in pursuing a career in graphic design have the choice of receiving a major or minor in graphic design at High Point University. Graphic design students are introduced to graphics software, typography and design fundamentals that are essential for a deeper understanding of Graphic Design. As their coursework progresses, students apply these skills in a unique instructional setting that blends marketing and advertising concepts with art creation.

Opportunities Unique to Graphic Design:

  • Digitally-based courses with emphasis on artistic development and the conceptual understanding needed to produce thoughtful, engaging and professional work
  • The power to combine artistic ability with technical knowledge to create designs used in print and electronic media
  • Faculty focused on a one-on-one approach to developing each student’s artistic and expressive abilities
  • Well-known visiting artists such as Sebastian Guerrini are welcomed to campus each year to provide students with experience and perspective

Graphic Design majors have access to cutting-edge technology including a 25- station Cintiq digital drawing and design lab, a 16- seat drafting and design studio, two Mac labs with large format printers, 3-D printers, fully equipped 2-D and 3-D studios and more.

#12: Electronic Media Production

empAll students in the Nido R. Qubein School of Communication take core classes focusing on developing communication competency in different situations, enhancing critical writing skills and producing messages utilizing cutting-edge equipment and software. Electronic media production is one of eight different communication sequences, and it centers on the craft of media production.

Students develop and exercise their audio and video production skills — including directing, producing, writing and editing — through in-class exercises that simulate real-world environments and expectations. Graduates are able to apply their skills toward a variety of television, radio, film, and corporate video jobs.

#13: Journalism

7950906328_f6e173a52c_zAnother track offered to students in the Nido R. Qubein School of Communication is journalism. High Point University journalism students tell interesting stories and enjoy mixing with leaders from the political, economic, sports, and entertainment fields. A few of the required courses for future journalists include human communication, copy editing, communication law and ethics, sports reporting and visual rhetoric and design.

#14: International Business

international businessThe international business major is housed in the Earl N. Phillips School of Business. Our curriculum seeks to prepare international business graduates culturally and socially, as well as professionally, for this rapidly expanding field of employment in the global economy. The international business major emphasizes international economics and other global courses, combined with in-depth language study in Chinese, French, Italian, or Spanish.

Our international business faculty are committed to undergraduate education and scholarship and have a wide range of knowledge to share in the classroom. Students are strongly encouraged to study internationally during their time at High Point University.

Examples of career fields relating to international business include the following:  

  • international marketing specialist
  • international product manager
  • international sales analyst
  • international financial analyst
  • international customer liaison
  • international stockbroker
  • purchasing manager
  • export/import manager

#15: Biology with a concentration in Health Science

18138772546_c2049380a5_zStudents pursuing a B.S. in biology take courses in biology and supporting areas, such as chemistry, mathematics, and statistics, that will provide sufficient depth to prepare them for success as biologists in graduate school, in education, in industry, and in professional schools (medicine, dentistry, podiatry, veterinary medicine and other health related fields). Students have the choice of three concentrations within their major based on their career interests:

  • Organismal and Evolutionary Biology concentration
  • Cellular/Molecular Biology and Biotechnology concentration
  • Health Science concentration – students interested in careers in Health Sciences (pre-med, pre-dental, pre-PA, etc.)

A few of the key courses offered in the health science concentration include human anatomy, general zoology, genetics, microbiology, animal physiology and immunology.
