Business Analytics & Economics Curriculum & Research

Econometrics, SQL, Tableau and Python sit on top of a full business core, so graduates can run the numbers and explain what they mean.

The B.S.B.A. in Business Analytics and Economics

The B.S.B.A. in Business Analytics and Economics teaches students to understand data and use it to inform major business decisions. Business analysts use data mining, predictive analytics and statistical analysis to find trends, and economics gives them the theory to explain why those trends happen.

Automated systems now collect much of the data. People still have to think critically about what it means, and the program is built around that step.

Economics Coursework

Students take Principles of Macroeconomics and Microeconomics, then International Economics or Comparative Economics, and choose upper-level courses such as Intermediate Microeconomics, Economic Growth, Labor Economics, Environmental Economics or Money, Banking, and Financial Markets. Every student takes Econometrics (ECO 4150).

The degree totals 128 credits, with 74 in the major.

Business Analytics Courses

Beyond Econometrics, students choose eight credits of analytics coursework:

  • ECO 3120 Business Analytics with SQL: querying business databases with SQL
  • ECO 3110 Business Data Visualization with Tableau: building dashboards and visual analyses in Tableau
  • DSC 2110 Data Visualization: visualizing data with code
  • ACC 3060 Accounting Analytics: data analysis tools applied to accounting records
  • BUA 2100 Excel-based Business Analysis: spreadsheet modeling for business analysis in Excel
  • CSC 1600 or CSC 1710 Introduction to Data or Introduction to Programming: a programming foundation in computer science

The Business Core

Students also complete Financial and Managerial Accounting, Financial Management, Business Law, Operations and Supply Chain Management, Principles of Marketing and Personal Selling, Business Statistics and Analysis, and the Business Career Boot Camp.

Undergraduate Research

Business analytics and economics students take on research projects with faculty, and Omicron Delta Epsilon members study economic trends and data analysis techniques beyond coursework. The Council on Undergraduate Research recognized HPU with its 2025 Campus-Wide Award for Undergraduate Research Accomplishments.

In summer 2026, Simeon Davis presented research on how education and community differences shape labor markets, and Connor Kresock studied the consumer costs of food allergies with Dr. Rivin Perinchery.

Beyond the Classroom

  • Internships
  • Study abroad global business courses
  • Projects with the High Point business community

“The Financial Management course was valuable on its own, but being in France gave us the chance to hear directly from local business owners and professors about the unique challenges of operating in a global business environment.”

How the Analytics and Economics Major Builds Data Skills

Students graduate fluent in the tools employers use. Coursework covers Excel with MOS certification, SQL, Tableau, Power BI, STATA, Python, R and SPSS. Students practice on Bloomberg and S&P Global software in the Tilley Trading Room, join the Omicron Delta Epsilon economics honor society and take on undergraduate research with faculty. Graduates can continue into the HPU MBA with a data analytics concentration.

The Princeton Review gives High Point University a 95 out of 99 rating for professor accessibility, based on its student surveys.

That skill set travels well. Anna Randles, a business analytics and economics major, landed an internship at Furnitureland South. Hunter Brown, who minored in economics, became a junior financial analyst at TeleSpecialists. Julia Tremblay, who also minored in economics, started a career in finance. Course descriptions are in the HPU undergraduate bulletin, and related majors include finance and accounting. The BLS outlook for operations research analysts covers national pay and job data.

Faculty include Chair Jerry Fox, MBA Director Nasir Assar, Michael McCully and John David Ariansen, who teaches business analytics.
