Cybersecurity Accreditation & Awards

The B.S. in Cybersecurity at High Point University carries SACSCOC institutional accreditation and shares its computer science foundation with HPU’s ABET-accredited Computer Science program.

Program Accreditation

The B.S. in Cybersecurity is offered through the Webb School of Engineering and carries High Point University’s institutional accreditation.

The program shares its computer science foundation with HPU’s Bachelor of Science in Computer Science, which is accredited by the Computing Accreditation Commission of ABET. Cybersecurity students complete eight foundational courses grounded in computer science before moving into penetration testing and reverse engineering.

University Accreditation

High Point University is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) and has been continuously accredited since 1951. SACSCOC accredits HPU to award bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees. SACSCOC has granted HPU Level V status, which authorizes a university to award doctoral degrees.

That institutional accreditation covers every degree High Point University grants, including the Bachelor of Science in Cybersecurity.

Recognition for Undergraduate Research

The Council on Undergraduate Research (CUR) named High Point University the recipient of its 2025 Campus-Wide Award for Undergraduate Research Accomplishments, judged against CUR’s Characteristics of Excellence in Undergraduate Research.

High Point University Rankings

U.S. News & World Report’s Best Colleges 2027 ranks High Point University #1 for Most Innovative Schools and #3 for Best Undergraduate Teaching among Regional Universities in the South. HPU also ranks #1 in its category for Earnings by Major, a new U.S. News factor that measures what graduates earn four years after leaving campus.

The Princeton Review’s Best 392 Colleges: 2027 Edition ranks High Point University #3 for Best-Run Colleges, #3 for Best College Dorms and #3 for Most Beautiful Campus. HPU is the only university in North Carolina ranked in the top 5 for all three.

Niche’s 2027 rankings place High Point University #1 in North Carolina for Best College Campuses, Best College Dorms and Best College Food, and #8 in North Carolina for Colleges with the Best Professors.

Measured by National Association of Colleges and Employers standards, 99% of HPU’s Class of 2025 was employed or continuing their education within 180 days, 13 points above the national average.

Cyber Competition Results

  • Fall 2024 National Cyber League: HPU’s team placed 43rd, HPU’s highest NCL team ranking, in a national field that included more than 9,260 students from more than 550 colleges.
  • U.S. Cyber Challenge: cybersecurity major Giovanni Centofanti was part of the team that won the Western regional and placed second at the U.S. Cyber Bowl.
  • 2022 TracerFIRE, sponsored by Sandia National Laboratories: HPU earned top team honors, and Nick Greiner, a computer science major with a cybersecurity concentration, posted the highest score.
  • 2019 Governor’s Cybersecurity Talent Competition: HPU ranked third in North Carolina.

ABET Leadership in the Webb School of Engineering

Dr. Michael Oudshoorn, founding dean of the Webb School of Engineering, has served as an ABET volunteer since 2004, including accreditation visits for cybersecurity programs. He is serving his second six-year term as an ABET commissioner and was elected to the commission’s executive committee in 2018.

Cybersecurity Students in the Field

Students in cybersecurity and computer science at High Point University test their skills in national competitions and internships. Spencer Day, who majored in criminal justice and computer science, interned in cybersecurity at La-Z-Boy and is now a senior cyber security researcher at GE Aerospace. Caitlin Black, a computer science major with a cybersecurity concentration, interned in the project management office at Old Dominion Freight Line, and Jonathan Raz, who minored in cybersecurity, interned in risk management at Exlibris.

“My internship at La-Z-Boy has made such an impact on my future.”

Course requirements are in the HPU undergraduate bulletin, and the Office of Career and Professional Development runs the Internship Guarantee Program. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics profiles information security analysts. Related study is available in computer science through the Webb School of Engineering.
