Data Science Salary and Job Outlook
U.S. News & World Report ranks High Point University #1 among Regional Universities in the South for Earnings by Major in Best Colleges 2027, a factor that measures what graduates earn four years after leaving campus.
Across all majors, 99% of High Point University’s Class of 2025 was employed or continuing their education within 180 days of graduation, 13 points above the national average, measured by National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) standards. The Princeton Review ranks HPU #14 for Best Career Services in its 2027 guide.
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported a $120,230 median annual wage for data scientists in May 2025 and projects employment to grow 35% from 2025 to 2035, with about 24,800 openings a year.
Salary and employment opportunities vary by occupation, industry, location, experience and other factors.

Roles AI and Data Science Graduates Can Pursue
The degree prepares students for roles such as data scientist, machine learning engineer, AI engineer, data engineer, research computing specialist and data analyst. The domain area a student pairs with the major, whether health care management, physics or economics, shapes which industry those roles sit in.
AI and Data Science Student Organizations
Data science students work alongside the computing and engineering organizations recognized in the Student Government Association club directory, including the Computer Science Society and the Robotics Club.
Students whose domain area sits outside computing often join that discipline’s organization as well, such as the Society of Physics Students.
Research and Mentorship
Webb School students present research at High-PURCS, HPU’s annual undergraduate research and creative works symposium, and computing students have presented posters at the ACM MidSoutheast Conference.
Students also work with Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, HPU’s Innovator in Residence, through projects such as the Woz Project, in which students turned a golf cart into an autonomous vehicle.
Data Careers in Finance and Industry
Jack Jaramillo, a finance and data science double major, joined Under Armour in Baltimore as a real estate professional after earning a return offer from an internship. “My courses ensured that there were plenty of presentations with professors’ feedback that helped work on my communication and presentation skills,” Jaramillo said.
Kelsey Quinn, a double major in computer science and mathematical economics, joined Bloomberg as a market data analyst, automating systems and analyzing data with Python and SQL. CeAnna Cummings, a double major in actuarial science and data analytics, joined JPMorgan Chase & Co. as a markets analyst and is now a market associate there.
At Regeneron Pharmaceuticals, Michael Dreher, a business administration major who minored in computer science, became an associate business intelligence and data analyst in a role created as a continuation of an internship there.
Data Internships and Graduate Study
Jess Bergen, a data analytics and statistics major, interned in research at Pfizer. Carolina Kapper, a double major in data analytics and statistics and mathematics, entered the Ph.D. program in biostatistics at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Data science students can also continue into graduate programs in data science, statistics, computer science and the domain fields they studied.

AI and Data Science Innovators in Residence
HPU’s Access to Innovators program connects students with global leaders for networking, mentorship and experiential learning. AI and data science students learn from AI expert Daniel Burrus, data expert Teena Piccione and Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak.
Burrus has spoken to HPU’s entire freshman class about the life skills that matter more in the age of artificial intelligence. Piccione told HPU business and engineering students, “You have to be able to translate between the business and technology sides.” In February 2026, Wozniak spoke to a software engineering class and brainstormed with HPU Minds, a student group using a headset to read brainwaves and control devices.
