While most classes are conducted in English, all Italian Language and Italian Culture courses are taught in Italian, ranging from beginning to advanced levels. All students studying abroad for a semester at LdM must take at least one Italian Language or, for those with an advanced Italian proficiency, an Italian Language & Culture course (taught in Italian). Additionally, students studying for language immersion should opt for home-stay housing. Note: Students enrolled in a formal certificate (Sustainable Product Design, Sustainable Furniture Design, Visual Communication for Fashion, or Fashion Design) are exempt from this requirement.
Students not enrolled in a formal certificate will need to list 9 unique courses on their LdM-specific application following review of their HPU study abroad application and confirmation of their LdM nomination. One course will be an Italian language course, then the remaining will include four courses of their choosing plus four alternates. Note: alternates cannot be different sections of the same course, as the Registrar will work to fill students in alternate sections before moving to alternate courses.
LdM offers four design certificates for our Interior Design and Fashion Merchandising Majors. These are available during the Spring semester for Juniors studying Interior Design or Fashion Merchandising, who have completed and passed all courses required for the major by the December prior to departure. Students electing to study a certificate will enroll in the classes listed and are exempt from the language requirement. When completing the application, please list the certificate name on your Course Equivalency Approval Form and have your form signed by your academic advisor. Equivalencies have been approved already by the Department Chair. These certificates are:
-Sustainable Product Design
-Sustainable Furniture Design
-Visual Communication for Fashion
-Fashion Design
