Founding Law Dean and Professor of Law Mark Martin attended the retirement ceremony held in honor of United States Court of Appeals Judge David B. Sentelle on June 9. The ceremonial session was convened by the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit and was held in the Ceremonial Courtroom of the E. Barrett Prettyman United States Courthouse in Washington, D.C.

Judge Sentelle was appointed Judge for the District of Columbia Circuit in October 1987, served as Chief Judge from February 11, 2008 until February 11, 2013, and took senior status on February 12, 2013. During his distinguished career as a jurist, Judge Sentelle served as the Presiding Judge of the Special Division for the Purpose of Appointing Independent Counsels, as the Chair of the United States Judicial Conference’s Executive Committee from 2010-2013, and as the Presiding Judge of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) Court of Review. United States Supreme Court Associate Justice Neil Gorsuch, who previously had served as a law clerk for Judge Sentelle, offered remarks honoring Judge Sentelle during the ceremonial session. Two other members of the United States Supreme Court, Associate Justices Clarence Thomas and Brett Kavanaugh, were also in attendance.

Dean Martin met Judge Sentelle during law school, and they have maintained their personal and professional connection for over thirty-five years. He has admired and respected Judge Sentelle and his many contributions to our judiciary and our country. According to Dean Martin,

“How appropriate for Judge Sentelle to be honored in this manner after almost forty years of federal judicial service. I am so thankful that I could be on hand for this ceremony.”
