Professor Scott Gaylord is a prominent Constitutional Law scholar who has an impressive background in both academia and legal practice. He earned his bachelor’s degree summa cum laude from Colgate University, his Ph.D. in philosophy from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and his J.D. from Notre Dame Law School, where he also graduated summa cum laude.

After law school, Professor Gaylord clerked for Judge Edith H. Jones on the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit and then practiced complex civil and commercial litigation for a large law firm. He became a full-time legal educator in 2007, where he developed a national reputation as a Constitutional Law expert. He has authored or co-authored 18 substantial law review articles; co-authored a Constitutional Law casebook; and has been asked to write more than 35 amicus briefs to the U.S. Supreme Court and federal circuit courts on prominent national cases involving religious liberty and free speech. He also started an appellate advocacy clinic and served on the North Carolina Chief Justice’s Commission on Professionalism, along with holding many other service and leadership roles.

Professor Gaylord will be teaching our first-year course in Constitutional Law, in addition to upper-level courses.

In commenting on his appointment as Professor of Law at HPU, Professor Gaylord shared:

“I am honored to have the opportunity to join the inaugural faculty at High Point Law.  It is an incredible blessing to work with Dean Martin and his excellent team to build a law school committed to training professionals who serve their clients and communities with integrity and grace. I am particularly excited to work with the many talented students who will help us develop a culture of humility, compassion, and mutual support. The entrepreneurial spirit and professionalism of our students will not only establish the benchmark for the Kenneth F. Kahn School of Law, but also will enrich and strengthen the larger legal profession for years to come. I cannot wait to welcome our inaugural class this August.”

Professor Peter Nemerovski, Associate Professor of Law and Director of Advocacy

Professor Pete Nemerovski is an esteemed expert in legal writing and will serve as HPU Law’s Director of Advocacy. In that role, he will oversee the Legal Research and Writing curriculum for first-year students, in which HPU Law will offer students individualized instruction in small classes of ten or fewer students.

Professor Nemerovski received his bachelor’s degree magna cum laude from Princeton University and his J.D. cum laude from the University of Michigan. Similar to Professor Gaylord, he clerked for the United States Court of Appeals and worked in large-firm practice before transitioning into academia. Specifically, Professor Nemerovski clerked for Judge Damon J. Keith of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit and then practiced civil litigation at two large law firms.

Professor Nemerovski began his law school teaching career in 2010 at the University of Miami School of Law and then transitioned in 2017 to teach at UNC Chapel Hill School of Law. Through his various roles at both institutions, he developed an expertise in innovative approaches to teaching legal writing. For instance, he is a leading thinker on the impact of generative AI on legal education and on teaching legal writing in particular. Professor Nemerovski has also developed national connections through his involvement in two prominent legal writing organizations: the Association of Legal Writing Directors and the Legal Writing Institute.

In commenting on his appointment to the HPU Law faculty, Professor Nemerovski stated:

“In my fourteen years of law teaching, I have tried to incorporate life skills and professionalism training into my courses. I was attracted to High Point by its God, family, and country values, and its goal of building a law school with a diversity of viewpoints among faculty and students. I’m excited to join the faculty at High Point and meet our first class of students. Along with my new colleagues, I look forward to helping prepare the next generation of lawyers to succeed in law practice and in life.”

In announcing these two new faculty colleagues, Founding Dean and Professor of Law Mark Martin expressed:

“Professor Gaylord and Professor Nemerovski have stellar credentials and professional backgrounds, both already with acclaimed careers as legal educators at other institutions. We are delighted they have decided to join HPU Law as we build a law school of distinction. They share our holistic vision to educate our students in the legal doctrine, skills, and values they need to become leaders of integrity in the legal profession.”
