HPU Law Featured in The North Carolina State Bar Journal

High Point University Promises a Different Kind of Law School

High Point University (HPU) is making waves in the legal education landscape with the announcement of its new law school, the Kenneth F. Kahn School of Law. As detailed in the recent article “High Point University Promises a Different Kind of Law School” by Mark P. Henriques, featured in The North Carolina State Bar Journal, this innovative institution is set to open its doors this Fall with a promise to revolutionize the way law is taught and learned.

Composed by Mark Henriques, a partner at Womble Bond Dickinson law firm in Charlotte and frequent State Bar Journal contributor, the article followed his examination of High Point Law’s program, including an interview with Founding Dean and Professor of Law, former North Carolina Chief Justice Mark Martin.

After completing his research, Henriques determined that, “HPU’s Law School will be different from the other law schools in North Carolina, judging by the faculty hired to date and the approach to instruction.” Indeed, High Point Law offers over 70 esteemed jurists and lawyers on its faculty and a bespoke, personalized educational experience.

In designing the school, the article notes, Dean Martin “wanted to focus on recruiting exceptional faculty who could bring a new curriculum to life for a relatively small group of engaged students.” This model greatly distinguished High Point Law, according to Henriques, as “personal interactions with experienced jurists are not offered at most law schools[.]”

In closing, the article provides a helpful summary of the core mission of HPU Law:

to educate law students in the life skills of effective written and oral communication, critical thinking, active listening, and cultural competence so that they will succeed as client-centered legal professionals in a competitive and rapidly changing world.

When asked about the article, Dean Martin said, “We are tremendously grateful to be highlighted in the State Bar Journal and to have our vision so accurately and succinctly conveyed to lawyers across North Carolina.”
