The Office of Career Development at High Point University Kenneth F. Kahn School of Law provides year-round programming designed to prepare students for successful summer internships, professional growth, and long-term career success. Throughout the academic year, the Office participates in a wide range of campus interview programs, career-focused workshops, networking opportunities, employer information sessions, and skills trainings that expose students to diverse areas of legal practice while helping them build practical and professional skills.
Pre-Orientation Workshops
High Point University Kenneth F. Kahn School of Law offers a comprehensive pre-orientation program designed to help admitted students prepare to transition successfully into law school before classes begin. Through weekly programming sessions focused on student success strategies, writing fundamentals, professional skill development, and the legal recruiting process, incoming law students will gain practical skills and knowledge to navigate the demands of legal education with confidence.
Successful Summer Internship Training
A major focus of the Office’s programming is preparing students for summer internships and future employment opportunities. During the spring semester, the Office coordinates a comprehensive “Successful Summer Internship” series featuring programming tailored to a variety of practice settings, including judicial clerkships, district attorney and public defender offices, criminal defense, legal services organizations, nonprofits, and civil law firms. These sessions included judges, attorneys, faculty members, HPU alumni, and upper-level students who shared practical guidance on workplace expectations, legal writing, professionalism, assignment management, organization, communication, and networking. Additional professionalism-focused programs address topics such as leveraging summer experiences, using legal research resources effectively, and developing the soft skills necessary for success in legal workplaces.
Employer Connections and Practitioner Panels
The Office also regularly brings attorneys, judges, bar leaders, and employers to campus to help students explore practice areas and build professional connections. Programming has included various law firm information sessions, a family law panel hosted with members of the North Carolina Advocates for Justice (NCAJ), and tax law and international law sessions with attorneys from the North Carolina Bar Association (NCBA). Students also had the opportunity to engage with JAG officers from the United States Marine Corps (USMC).
Personalized Career Support
The Office of Career Development also provides individualized advising and ongoing support to students throughout the job search process, including resume and cover letter review, interview preparation, networking guidance, career counseling, and assistance navigating internship and employment decisions.
Through innovative programming, employer engagement, and personalized support, the Office works to prepare students to succeed both during law school and throughout their legal careers.
