Mathematics Applied to Economic Theory
Economics has become a technical field that uses almost every area of mathematics. The B.S. in Mathematical Economics, offered by the Department of Mathematical Sciences, teaches the mathematical and statistical techniques used in economic analysis so students can understand economic models and apply mathematics to real-world problems.

Undergraduate Research in Mathematical Economics
Many mathematical economics majors take on undergraduate research in their senior year, working with faculty from mathematics, statistics or economics to analyze an economic topic of their own choosing.
Working With Steve Wozniak
Steve Wozniak, HPU’s Innovator in Residence, visits campus regularly to work with students in the school. Kelsey Land worked on the Woz Project and two research projects as a student.
Classes average a 17-to-1 student-to-faculty ratio.
B.S. in Mathematical Economics Degree Requirements
The B.S. in Mathematical Economics requires 128 credits: 56 credits of major requirements, 36 to 44 credits of University Core requirements and 28 to 36 elective credits.
Along with the key courses, the major includes ECO 3050 Intermediate Microeconomics, STS 3250 Time Series and Forecasting, and either STS 2610 Business Statistics and Analysis or STS 2910 Introduction to Statistical Analysis with SAS Applications. Students also take two economics electives at the 3000 level or above, or complete the senior research sequence MTH 4910 and MTH 4920 with one economics elective.
Department of Mathematical Sciences Faculty
Mathematical Sciences faculty are led by Dr. Jenny Sharpe, chair and professor of mathematical sciences. Professors include Lisa Carnell, Edward Fuselier, Adam Graham-Squire and Robert Harger, who is also director of general education. Karen O’Hara is an associate professor, and assistant professors include Dustin Nichols, Adam Pennell and Brielle Spencer-Tyree.
Research That Leads to Analyst Roles
Mathematical economics coursework at High Point University ends in research that graduates carry into their careers. Alayna Adams presented final research to the mathematics department before joining STEM Healthcare. Andrew Lopez completed an econometrics project before starting at Citizens Bank. Kelsey Quinn took part in an inaugural data analysis course and joined Bloomberg. Each of these graduates paired economic theory with quantitative research.
“I was encouraged to apply to jobs early and get ahead of the curve.”
Adams, Junior Business Analyst, STEM Healthcare
Full requirements are in the HPU undergraduate bulletin, and the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics describes the work of economists. Related programs in the Webb School of Engineering include mathematics, and the Office of Career and Professional Development supports internship searches.
Across HPU, 99% of the Class of 2025 was employed or continuing their education within 180 days of graduation, measured by NACE standards.
