Accreditation for the B.S. in Mathematical Economics
Mathematical Economics is offered through the Department of Mathematical Sciences in the Webb School of Engineering and is covered by High Point University’s institutional accreditation from SACSCOC.
What Distinguishes the Degree
The B.S. in Mathematical Economics places differential equations, intermediate statistical analysis and the calculus sequence inside an economics degree. Employers and graduate programs read that coursework as evidence of abstract thinking and high-level problem solving.
ABET Accreditation Across the Webb School of Engineering
The Webb School of Engineering holds ABET accreditation for three Bachelor of Science programs. In October 2025, Computer Science was accredited by the Computing Accreditation Commission of ABET, and Computer Engineering and Electrical Engineering by the Engineering Accreditation Commission.
Mathematical Economics students take their mathematics courses alongside these programs. Founding dean Dr. Michael Oudshoorn has served as an ABET volunteer since 2004, is serving his second six-year term as an ABET commissioner and was elected to the commission’s executive committee in 2018.
University Accreditation
High Point University is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) and has been continuously accredited since 1951. SACSCOC accredits HPU to award bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees.
Departmental Honors in Mathematical Economics
Mathematical Economics majors can graduate with departmental honors by completing the B.S. requirements, completing the senior research sequence MTH 4910 and MTH 4920, and holding a major GPA of 3.5 or higher at graduation.
Student Research Honors
In 2026, sophomore Jake Ankrum, a biochemistry and physics major, was one of 454 students nationwide named a Barry Goldwater Scholar.
Recognition for Undergraduate Research
The Council on Undergraduate Research named High Point University the recipient of its 2025 Campus-Wide Award for Undergraduate Research Accomplishments, judged against CUR’s Characteristics of Excellence in Undergraduate Research.
U.S. News & World Report Rankings
In U.S. News & World Report’s Best Colleges 2027 edition, High Point University was named the #1 Most Innovative Regional University in the South and ranked #1 in its category for Earnings by Major. HPU also ranked #3 for Best Undergraduate Teaching among Regional Universities in the South.
Mathematical Economics Graduates at Work
Mathematical Economics graduates of High Point University work in analytics, banking and finance. Alayna Adams joined STEM Healthcare as a junior business analyst. Andrew Lopez started as an associate licensed banker at Citizens Bank. Kelsey Quinn, who majored in mathematical economics and computer science, joined Bloomberg as a market data analyst. Adams gave a final research presentation to the mathematics department before graduating.
“At HPU, I was exposed to many skills, such as being able to effectively communicate, not only with engineers but also with business counterparts.”
Course requirements are in the HPU undergraduate bulletin. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics profiles economists. Students can pair the major with computer science or data analytics and statistics in the Webb School of Engineering.
Across HPU, 99% of the Class of 2025 was employed or continuing their education within 180 days of graduation, measured by NACE standards.
