Freshman Parents: February 2015

Dear Parents,

Thank you for attending our Winter Family Weekend February 6-8th. For those of you who weren’t able to attend, we missed you. We’ve posted photos from the event here.

The Freshman Success Team welcomes partnerships with parents and families in order to ensure High Point University freshmen transition smoothly into academics and campus life.  Freshman Success Coaches serve not only as academic advisors during students’ freshman year, they also serve as network coordinators, connecting your student to many other campus services and activities.

This second semester of college continues to serve as a time of transition and adjustment.  I trust your student has found their niche on campus, a group of friends, and a few clubs of interest.  If not, know that we would love to assist.  It is not uncommon for some students to have an increase in homesickness as we begin a new semester.

Lynda Noffsinger, our director of counseling services provides the following insight:

1. The best antidote to homesickness is action: becoming involved in the community by immersing oneself in academic work, making positive connections with classmates and professors, joining organizations and attending events on campus.

2. If a student is “there” it’s difficult for him or her to be “here.” Technology is a wonderful convenience! However, if a student is so preoccupied with texting or talking with family members or friends from home, that can get in the way of a student being fully present in his or her daily life at HPU. Ironically, frequent contact with people from home makes homesickness worse, not better.

3. Sometimes all students need to overcome homesickness is a safe, supportive place to talk about their feelings in a confidential setting. HPU has six licensed professional counselors in the Counseling Center on the third floor of the Slane Center that would be glad to help.
