Bruce Shores: Retrospective

Bruce Shores: Retrospective
February 11th at 4:30-5:30 in the Sechrest Gallery

This exhibition presents a retrospective of work by Bruce Shores, a longtime art educator and valued member of High Point University’s Department of Studio Art. Shores has shaped generations of High Point’s students through foundational courses in art appreciation, drawing, and two- and three-dimensional design, fostering in them a deep respect for visual tradition, careful observation, and disciplined making.

Rooted in familiar genres, like the human figure, the still life, and the landscape, Shores’s paintings and drawings are distinguished by their restraint and quiet attentiveness. His work resists spectacle in favor of contemplation, treating its subjects with a sense of reverence that reflects both technical mastery and ethical care.

Nowhere is this reverence more evident than in his landscapes, which convey a profound sense of place and memory. Informed by the long traditions of landscape painting and by Shores’s enduring connection to rural environments, these works juxtapose sweeping vistas with meditative stillness, offering images shaped as much by personal reflection as by direct observation.

Together, the works in this exhibition reveal a sustained commitment to tradition not as repetition, but as an ongoing conversation; one that values patience, humility, and the quiet power of looking closely.
