General Engineering Curriculum & Research

The B.S. in General Engineering pairs a required engineering core with 40 credits of electives across mechanical, electrical and computer engineering and computer science.

General Engineering Electives

The B.S. in General Engineering pairs a required core with 40 credits of engineering electives. Electives must include at least 8 credits each of mechanical (MME), electrical and computer (ECE) and computer science (CSC) courses, and at least 12 elective credits must be at the 3000 level or higher.

Students build breadth across mechanics, thermodynamics, materials science and computer science, or concentrate in one area with guidance from faculty. The flexibility lets students explore several disciplines before choosing one to pursue in depth.

Required Courses

The core includes:

  • MME 1005: Introduction to Engineering Design. Hands-on design projects that teach the engineering design process from the first semester.
  • MME 1010: Engineering Graphics. Technical sketching, engineering drawing and computer-aided design.
  • MME 1015: Programming in MATLAB. An introduction to MATLAB programming for engineering problem solving.
  • ECE 2014: Engineering and Technology Ethics. The ethical and professional responsibilities engineers carry in practice.
  • MTH 1415, 1425, 2050 and 2150: Engineering Mathematics. Four semesters of engineering mathematics, from Mathematics for Engineering I through Mathematical Methods for Engineering and Physics II.
  • STS 3005: Probability and Statistics for Engineers. Probability models and statistical methods applied to engineering data.

Students also choose Linear Algebra or Discrete Structures, choose Fundamentals of Physics II or General Chemistry, and finish with a two-semester senior design project in either the MME or ECE sequence.

The Webb School Makerspace

The Makerspace in the Webb School of Engineering is open to students 24/7, starting freshman year with Introduction to Engineering Design. Equipment includes 3D printers, a laser cutter, a computer-controlled router, a vacuum former, a PCB mill, saws, soldering stations and a computer-controlled sewing machine for building electronics into garments.

Makerspace Director Matt Eaton, an instructor in the Webb School, maintains the equipment, works one-on-one with students on their projects and develops programming for makerspace activities. Students use the space for freshman and senior design courses and for their own projects. Questions about the Makerspace can go to [email protected].

Engineering Projects and Mentorship

Engineering students run the Robotics Club, which designed a lunar rover reviewed on campus by Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, HPU’s Innovator in Residence. At IEEE SoutheastCon 2024, the HPU Robotics Club placed second in the hardware competition.

Students have also built a toy car driven by a headset that reads the driver’s brain signals, a brain-computer interface project mentored by Wozniak that brought together neuroscience, engineering and computer science students.

The program is led by Dr. Brian Bernard, chair and associate professor of mechanical engineering, with courses taught by faculty across mechanical, electrical and computer engineering and computer science.

Engineering Students Who Went Before

General Engineering majors learn alongside Webb School of Engineering students who have already turned that preparation into jobs and internships. Sarah Freeman, an electrical engineering major, interned as a project leader with ASSA ABLOY. Luke Schooley, a computer engineering major, interned with Siemens Healthineers. Emily Lattanzio moved from computer engineering at HPU into embedded software work at STURDY Corporation.

“HPU helped me develop the life skills that are increasingly valuable in today’s technology-driven world.”

Freeman, electrical engineering major

The Princeton Review gives High Point University a 95 out of 99 rating for professor accessibility, based on its student surveys.

General Engineering course requirements are listed in the HPU undergraduate bulletin. The Office of Career and Professional Development helps engineering students find internships, and the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics describes the work of electrical and electronics engineers.
