Semester Abroad
Universidad Pontifica Comillas
Madrid, Spain
Designed particularly for HPU students majoring in political science or international relations, or students wanting to complete some general education requirements, Universidad Pontifica Comillas (UPC) offers a campus environment with a diverse student body in the heart of Madrid.
Established in 1890 as a Catholic Seminary, today, UPC is a private university offering a variety of bachelor's degrees that are available to domestic and international students. UPC is the only Spanish university to be ranked in the top 100 in the world by Times Higher Education.
NOTE: UPC is not suited for HPU students studying business administration, international business, or Spanish.
The city of Madrid is a welcoming environment for young adults. There are parks to enjoy the beautiful weather, tapas bars around every corner, and cultural museums like El Prado to stay busy on nights and weekends. Experience open-air markets with handmade clothes and jewelry in the morning then make your way to Salamanca District for upscale shopping and dining. Students often venture outside of the city by planning weekend trips to other Spanish cities like Barcelona by train or by finding cheap flights to other European cities.
While many classes are taught entirely in Spanish, UPC does offer several English-taught courses for those with little Spanish fluency. Students wishing to take courses in Spanish must have completed the prerequisite course, SPN 2140. To help students gain a head start in language acquisition, Comillas offers free Spanish Courses at 7 levels upon arrival.
With over 1,900 international students studying at Comillas, the university is well-equipped to receive students from HPU.

For students interested in studying a course in Spanish, a Spanish Language Course is available for students with intermediate knowledge of the Spanish language. Students will need to take an online Spanish level test before enrolling in the language course.
Classes at UPC are valued using the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS). Two ECTS = 1 HPU credits (e.g., 6 ECTS = 3 credits, 5 ECTS = 3 credits). Students should aim to enroll in 30 ECTS per semester.

Credits Information
For High Point University to recognize the credits you complete abroad, you must earn at least a grade equivalent to a C in the U.S. HPU will not accept credit for courses with grades of C– or below. Grades for all courses earned abroad are recorded on the international transcript. Credits are received by HPU as transfer credits, which means the credit is received but the grade is not. Your HPU grade point average will not be impacted positively or negatively by your study abroad courses.
