Outside the classroom, students can choose to participate in a variety of ensembles in the Piedmont Triad area and around the world that will prepare them for graduate study or provide them with useful relevant job experience. In 2011, 120 students in the choral department performed a solo concert at New York City’s Carnegie Hall, the most renowned concert stage in the United States. In 2013, as part of the HPU Global Experience: An American Celebration of Music is Italy; students took a 10-day tour throughout Italy performing at some of the most renown cathedrals and basilicas, including St. Peter’s Basilica, Santa Maria sopra Minerva, Siena Cathedral, Santa Maria de Ricci, Florence Cathedral, and St. Mark’s Basilica.
At High Point University students have the option of developing the research topic of their choice. Topics may include but are not limited to the following:
• Performance practice
• Music composition
• Music history
• Music literature
• Music technology
Additionally, music majors and minors can tailor their curriculums to prepare them for careers in other specialized areas in music, such as music business, sacred music and video game music composition.
To keep students up-to-date with the latest music education and music performance tools, the HPU Department of Music offers a state-of-the-art Music Technology Laboratory (MTL). This music lab includes Mac computers with 24” monitors, 61-key midi keyboards, and industry standard music software, including Finale, Sibelius, Pro Tools, Reason, Strike, and East/West Symphonic Gold Sound Library. Students taking courses in the MTL have 24-hour access to explore, work on projects, or just study in a warm, inviting atmosphere.
Finally, the High Point University Department of Music is proud to be the only school in North Carolina with the prestigious All-Steinway designation. Classrooms, teaching studios, practice rooms, and performance spaces all have Steinway pianos. At High Point University, students deserve to practice, compose and perform on the very best.
