Advent Devotional | Day 18

Taylor Ann Hartley

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4: 6-7

Devotional

My senior year thus far has been a profound period of reflection. I have spent a lot of time thinking about who the girl was that started her freshman year here at High Point University –– and who I am now. How I’ve grown and changed.

In my reflections, I have thought deeply about my proudest accomplishments. And the more I thought about it, I realized that it’s not my grades/ or internships / or even being able to speak with you right now. Don’t get me wrong, I am exceedingly grateful and proud of those things. Yet, the more I think about it, the more I am simply proud of the friendships I have formed here. The people I have met continually choose me and love me. It’s a profound worldly peace that I didn’t know before. You know, it’s the kind of peace where you can sit next to someone in silence and feel full. In the same way, it’s the kind of peace where I know that I can say whatever comes to my mind and know that they will hear me // and respect me.

See, I think Jesus is a lot like a wonderful friendship in that way. I can sit in meditation with Him and know I am enveloped in love. I can tell him what’s on my mind, and He can listen better than anyone.
