Because of His sacrifice, each of us has the opportunity to choose Him. Jesus does tell us that when we choose to be crucified with Christ and not live according to this world, life will be anything but easy.
However, we can live joyfully despite earthly hurt and know that Jesus understands exactly how we feel, and we can know that He loves us because He gave Himself for us!
And that is the epitome of joy.
