Jewish Life and Hillel Frequently Asked Questions
Our diverse community includes students from various Jewish backgrounds—secular, Reform, Conservative, interfaith, and everything in between. We provide an inviting space for students to explore their individual Jewish journeys while also being a vital part of the greater Jewish community here at HPU.

Students, we are here to help make sure that your time on campus is the best experience it can be. You are part of a larger community that is always ready to provide opportunities, resources, support, and time.

Parents, let us be part of your extended family as your student navigates their college journey. We are happy to be a resource, send a care package, deliver a birthday cake, or provide other valuable connections.

Approximately 5% of the student population identifies as Jewish.

Our programming calendar is vibrantly centered around Shabbat and Jewish holidays, featuring:

  • Weekly Shabbat Dinners and celebrations for High Holy Days, Passover, and Hanukkah.
  • Social & Cultural Events: Karaoke, board game nights, movie nights, crafts, Café Ivrit (Hebrew Conversation Cafe), and our popular Big/Little program.
  • Jewish Learning & Identity: Jewish Learning Fellowships, Rosh Chodesh celebrations, and baking challah and hamantaschen.
  • Community & Leadership: Freshmen-only programs, immersive travel experiences, and various leadership opportunities.
  • Tikkun Olam (Repairing the World): Dedicated projects and initiatives for community service.

As a student-centered organization, we always welcome and encourage student ideas to shape our dynamic calendar!

Get involved by coming to an activity or Shabbat dinner. Bring a friend. There are no costs associated with being a member of Hillel.

Hillel at High Point is home to a diverse community of students — representing a wide range of backgrounds, majors, levels of Jewish observance, and interests. Our students come from across the country and are involved in everything from Greek life and campus leadership to the arts, STEM, and service organizations.

They engage with Hillel in many ways:

  • Jewish life & learning: Shabbat dinners, High Holidays, Jewish Learning Fellowships, Rosh Chodesh gatherings
  • Cultural & creative: Challah baking, crafts, Café Ivrit, Hanukkah celebrations, Purim festivities
  • Social & community: Karaoke nights, board games, movie screenings, meaningful service through Tikkun Olam projects

Whether someone grew up deeply connected to Jewish tradition or is just beginning to explore it, they’ll find a place to belong — and grow — in our Hillel community.

Jewish Life has a solid presence at High Point University, where students find a strong sense of belonging and feel secure in their Jewish identity and support for Israel. The university actively cultivates an atmosphere of respect, understanding, and inclusion—empowering students to connect with their faith and culture within a truly harmonious and positive campus community.

All our programs at Hillel or on campus are kosher-style or vegetarian.

We host Shabbat dinner weekly. There is no cost to students, however, we ask for weekly registration through social media.

The United Methodist Church is committed to the flourishing of all faith traditions and freedom of religious expression. While High Point University is affiliated with the United Methodist Church, that does not mean that everyone on campus is Methodist (or even Christian). The university is committed to religious expression and a spirit of openness, and the Chapel and Religious Life Office is among the biggest supporters of the Jewish community. Jewish students feel comfortable and well supported in this community.
