DEATH CERTIFICATES

If no funeral home is used before the transfer of a donor from the place of death, the Willed Body Program will file an electronic death certificate in the county where the death occurred.

Family members or authorized representatives may purchase certified copies of the death certificate by contacting the Register of Deeds in the county where the death occurred.

The Register of Deeds for each county can be found at
ncard.us/find-your-register-of-deeds/

If you are unsure of which county the death occurred, please call us at
336-841-LIFE (5433), and we will be happy to provide you with the information.

SOCIAL SECURITY

It is very important to contact Social Security after the death of a loved one. If no funeral home is used before the transfer of a donor from the place of death, the Willed Body Program will notify Social Security of a donor’s death, as required by law. To apply for death benefits a family member must personally contact Social Security.

You can contact Social Security by phone at 1-800-772-1213, by visiting their website at www.socialsecurity.gov, or by visiting them in person at your local Social Security Office.
