The B.S. in Computer Science at High Point University is accredited by the Computing Accreditation Commission of ABET.

ABET Accreditation for the B.S. in Computer Science

The Bachelor of Science in Computer Science is accredited by the Computing Accreditation Commission of ABET. HPU announced the accreditation on October 9, 2025.
ABET accreditation demonstrates that the program meets established standards for computing education, including curriculum quality, faculty qualifications, student outcomes and continuous improvement. For students, accreditation provides an additional measure of the program’s academic quality and alignment with established standards in the field.

What ABET Accreditation Reviews

ABET accreditation evaluates programs against established criteria designed to promote quality and continuous improvement in computing education. The review considers areas such as curriculum, faculty, facilities, student outcomes and the program’s processes for evaluating and improving student learning.
Accreditation is reviewed on a recurring cycle, helping programs maintain their commitment to established educational standards and continuous improvement.

What ABET Accreditation Means for Graduates

Many employers, especially in the engineering, defense and technology sectors, prefer or require graduates of accredited programs. Admission to some graduate programs and eligibility for certain professional licensure exams can also depend on a degree from an accredited program.

ABET Accreditation Across the Webb School of Engineering

The Webb School of Engineering holds ABET accreditation for three of its Bachelor of Science programs: Computer Science, Computer Engineering and Electrical Engineering. The school’s founding dean, Dr. Michael Oudshoorn, has served as an ABET volunteer since 2004 and has served as an ABET program evaluator and helped develop accreditation criteria for computer science programs. He is serving his second six-year term as an ABET commissioner and was elected to the commission’s executive committee in 2018.

University Accreditation

High Point University is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC). The university has maintained continuous accreditation since 1951. SACSCOC accreditation provides institutional recognition that High Point University meets established standards for academic quality, governance, student services and institutional effectiveness.

Recognition for Undergraduate Research

The Council on Undergraduate Research (CUR) named High Point University the recipient of its 2025 Campus-Wide Award for Undergraduate Research Accomplishments. The award recognizes institutions that demonstrate a strong commitment to undergraduate research and are evaluated according to CUR’s Characteristics of Excellence in Undergraduate Research, including evidence of depth, breadth and continued development of undergraduate research opportunities.

Student Research Honors

High Point University students also earn national recognition for research. In 2026, sophomore Jake Ankrum, a biochemistry and physics major, was one of 454 students nationwide named a Barry Goldwater Scholar. Read more about undergraduate research in Computer Science.

Where Computer Science Graduates Build Careers

Computer Science graduates of High Point University write software for national employers. Thomas Langford became a software engineer at Gilbarco Veeder-Root, Christian Weigandt joined The MathWorks as an associate software analyst, and Tara Jue built a career as an application developer with Morgan Stanley after interning there.

“The professors in the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science helped me to push myself and grow in my knowledge. They constantly guided me and taught me to be more confident in myself.”

Weigandt, Associate Software Analyst, The MathWorks

Required courses and credit totals for the B.S. and B.A. are listed in the HPU undergraduate bulletin. The program sits inside the Webb School of Engineering, and the Office of Career and Professional Development helps students line up internships before graduation. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics profiles the work of software developers, the role many graduates hold.

Across HPU, 99% of the Class of 2025 was employed or continuing their education within 180 days of graduation, measured by NACE standards.
