Computer Science Curriculum & Research

High Point University offers B.S. and B.A. degrees in Computer Science, with coursework spanning programming, artificial intelligence, machine learning, software engineering and cybersecurity.

B.S. and B.A. in Computer Science

High Point University offers two undergraduate degree options in Computer Science, allowing students to choose a course of study that aligns with their academic interests and career goals.

The Bachelor of Science in Computer Science emphasizes technical depth and provides opportunities for students to build advanced computing knowledge and pursue research interests. The program is accredited by the Computing Accreditation Commission of ABET.

The Bachelor of Arts in Computer Science offers a broader liberal arts framework, providing students with opportunities to combine computer science with additional areas of study. It can be a valuable option for students interested in pairing computer science with a second major or exploring interdisciplinary interests.

Both degree programs provide students with opportunities to learn from experienced faculty and engage with computing resources and hands-on learning experiences.

What Computer Science Students Study

Computer Science coursework includes:

  • Computer programming in R, Python, C and C++ (CSC 1610, CSC 1705, CSC 1710, CSC 1720)
  • Artificial intelligence and machine learning (CSC 3250)
  • Data structures and algorithms (CSC 1720, CSC 2710)
  • Database systems and data management (CSC 2212)
  • Data visualization
  • Software engineering (CSC 4710)
  • Malware analysis

Through these areas of study, students develop programming, analytical and problem-solving skills that can support further study and careers in computing and technology.

New Computer Science majors start with an introductory programming course, CSC 1710 or CSC 1705, alongside a mathematics course set by the university’s math placement process.

Laboratories and the HPU Makerspace

Computer Science students have access to the department’s laboratories and the Webb School Makerspace, where they build hands-on projects and apply concepts from their coursework.

The Makerspace in the Webb School of Engineering is open to students 24/7, starting freshman year with Introduction to Engineering Design. Equipment includes 3D printers, a laser cutter, a computer-controlled router, a vacuum former, a PCB mill, saws, soldering stations and a computer-controlled sewing machine for building electronics into garments.

Makerspace Director Matt Eaton, an instructor in the Webb School, maintains the equipment, works one-on-one with students on their projects and develops programming for makerspace activities. Students use the space for freshman and senior design courses and for their own projects. Questions about the Makerspace can go to [email protected].

High Point University also reports an average student-to-faculty ratio of 17:1, supporting faculty mentorship and individualized academic guidance.

Student Research Projects

High Point University students have explored applications of technology across fields such as virtual reality, health and safety, and autonomous vehicles.

Hanna Zelis developed a virtual reality project focused on phobia exposure therapy and presented her work to Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak. She later pursued virtual reality applications for life-saving uses and research on reducing injury risk in athletes under the mentorship of Dr. Lloyd Williams, associate professor of computer science.

The Woz Project began in 2016, when Steve Wozniak became High Point University’s Innovator in Residence, with students building a self-driving golf cart under his mentorship.

How Coursework Turns Into Careers

Course projects at High Point University give Computer Science students work they can show employers. Kyle Ouellette built an air traffic control simulator with a team in the Software Engineering course before joining Players’ Lounge as a junior software engineer. Ryan Diaz helped build a self-driving golf cart with Steve Wozniak, and Grace Crockett taught programming as an intern at Microsoft.

“High Point University helped me to get where I am today by teaching from the bottom up, starting with the basic fundamentals.”

Full course requirements are in the HPU undergraduate bulletin. Students can add depth through the Webb School of Engineering makerspace and research with faculty, and the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics outlines the skills employers expect of software developers.

Across HPU, 99% of the Class of 2025 was employed or continuing their education within 180 days of graduation, measured by NACE standards.
