Semester Abroad
Al Akhawayn University
Ifrane, Morocco
Al Akhawayn University in Ifrane (AUI) seeks to educate the future citizen-leaders of Morocco and the world through a globally orientated, English-language, liberal arts curriculum. Similar to HPU, AUI’s mission is to nurture students into becoming a global force for change with the ability to lead a meaningful and successful life at home or abroad.
Al Akhawayn University is located in the resort community of Ifrane nestled in the Middle Atlas Mountains. The region is known for its beautiful forests, mountains, lakes, and waterfalls. Located just 60 kilometers from the historically rich imperial cities of Fez and Meknes, Ifrane is easily accessible by car, bus, and taxi. The architecture of the campus complements the distinctive building style of Ifrane with high-pitched tile roofs designed to move the large quantities of heavy, wet snow each winter.
AUI is a 185-acre modern campus located in the wooded area of Ifrane. Academic life is rigorous but highly personalized: the student to faculty ratio is 13 students for each full-time faculty member. All faculty members have offices and maintain a minimum of 9 office hours per week for easy access by students. Because the average class size is 17, students have ample opportunity to question, respond, and interact with the professor and classmates.

Academic Program
AUI offers undergraduate degrees in Communications, Human Resources Development, International Studies, Business Administration, and Computer Science. The university also offers coursework in the humanities and studies of Arabic culture and language.
Students can take only one language class of a specific language except if they choose to take ARA 1300/1301 and another ARA XXXX which will be determined after the placement test. There are no intensive courses in a regular semester.
Students may take 2 different languages classes such as French and Arabic.
Regarding language course codes:
ARA classes are for learners of Arabic as a foreign language.
ARB classes are for native speakers of Arabic and foreign students rarely place high enough to take these classes.
FRE classes are for learners of French as a foreign language.
FRN classes are for learners of French as a second language and students have to be very, very advanced in order to hope to be placed in these classes.
Be aware that there are a few content courses that are now being taught in Arabic and the title should indicate this with the note (in Arabic). There are no content courses taught in French except one in the Business School for senior business students.

Credit Transfer
For High Point University to recognize the credits you complete abroad, you must earn at least a grade equivalent to a C in the U.S. HPU will not accept credit for courses with grades of C– or below. Grades for all courses earned abroad are recorded on the international transcript. Credits are received by HPU as transfer credits, which means the credit is received but the grade is not. Your HPU grade point average will not be impacted positively or negatively by your study abroad courses.
