University of Reading
Reading, England
Discover the University of Reading, a global university that enjoys a world-class reputation for teaching, research, and enterprise. Founded in the 19th century as an extension college of the University of Oxford, Reading was the only University to be awarded a charter between the two world wars. The University of Reading is now recognized as one of the top 200 Universities in the world and is home to 19,000 students from over 150 countries. It offers a wide range of academic programs from the pure and applied sciences to languages, humanities, social sciences, business, and arts. The University features more than 50 research centers, many of which are recognized as international centers of excellence in areas including agriculture, biological and physical sciences, European histories and cultures, and meteorology. Reading remains today as it was when it was founded: one of the most popular higher education choices in the UK.

The town of Reading is large enough to boast a range of shops, nightlife, restaurants and arts, and sports venues, but small enough to feel welcoming. It also has fantastic transport links, and you can reach London within half an hour by train. Reading has a proud history of welcoming people from across the globe, and international students often comment on the warm atmosphere and multicultural vibe found here. Reading University Students’ Union (RUSU) is an independent body ran by students, for students, and provides facilities, entertainment and opportunities to help you make the most of your time at University. Like football? The student union at the University of Reading is located three miles from Madejski Stadium, the home of Reading Football Club of the English Championship League (second level). Whitenights, the main campus in Reading, is set in 130 hectares of beautiful parkland, so you’ll find plenty of places to relax during the day. The campus has won seven consecutive Green Flag awards, recognizing it as one of Britain’s top green spaces.

You will generally need a visa to study in the UK if you are a national of a country outside the European Economic Area (EEA) or Switzerland. If the program you are applying to is shorter than six months, you can enter on a Short-term study visa. If your course is longer than six months, you will need a Tier 4 (General) visa. More information about student visas can be found on the GOV.UK website.

You can only apply for a visa once you have been offered a place on a course and can meet all other eligibility pre-requisites. It is your responsibility to meet the requirements of your visa and leave the country by the date it specifies. You can obtain visa advice from your local Embassy or UK High Commission. The UK Council for International Student Affairs (UKCISA) also provides a detailed guide on making a Tier 4 application.

Modules in the United Kingdom are valued using the Credit Accumulation and Transfer Scheme (CATS), where 10 CATS are equivalent to 3 HPU credits, 15: 4, and 20:5, etc. Occasionally, credits may also be listed in the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS), where 2 ECTS are equivalent to 1 HPU credit. Students enroll in a semester load of 50-60 CATS, or 28-32 ECTS, which is equivalent to a semester's course load at HPU. In planning, look for at least twice as many available modules as you may intend to take, giving you options and alternate courses for enrollment. View the modules available to incoming exchange students on Reading's website and read the Guide to Selecting Modules for information on modules (classes) available to study.
Credits Information
For High Point University to recognize the credits you complete abroad, you must earn at least a grade equivalent to a C in the U.S. HPU will not accept credit for courses with grades of C– or below. Grades for all courses earned abroad are recorded on the international transcript. Credits are received by HPU as transfer credits, which means the credit is received but the grade is not. Your HPU grade point average will not be impacted positively or negatively by your study abroad courses.
