Students with disabilities have the right to access higher education, and High Point University is committed to providing reasonable accommodations to ensure equal access to academics and campus life.

Because the term “life skills” means different things in different contexts, please note the distinction below:

High Point University’s Premier Life Skills: Professional Traits & Career Readiness

HPU uses the term “life skills” to describe the vital professional traits and practical wisdom that employers seek in new hires. These offerings prepare students for the world as it is going to be by emphasizing skills such as:

  • Motivation and Coachability

  • Adaptability and Resilience

  • Professional Communication and Relational Capital

Adaptive Life Skills and the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA)

Within the secondary education context, the phrase “life skills” is often used to refer to adaptive behavior skills, which include practical, social, and conceptual domains. These skills are foundational for daily functioning, personal care, social interaction, and independent living.

Our Scope of Support

HPU’s life skills programs are exclusively focused on professional development and career readiness, which requires a high level of student independence. While eligible students may be offered limited, individualized coaching focused on skill development (with eligibility determined by the program director), our programs are not designed for students with significant delays in adaptive or independent living skills.

Students and families are encouraged to consider whether the expectations of independence and the level of support offered at HPU align with their individual needs.
