Frequently Asked Questions:
Can a student walk in without an appointment when they are sick?
No, an appointment is required to visit the HPU Student Health.
My returning student has not yet visited health services; how should they prepare for the first visit?
While not a requirement for visiting HPU Student Health, we recommend that your student establish a MyChart account by visiting www.novanthealth.org/mychart. This will allow your student to have access to all of their medical information, ask questions of the provider and also take advantage of online video visits.
My student is under 18 years of age; how can they seek medical care?
The HIPAA Privacy and Consent to Treat forms required by High Point University grant permission to HPU Student Health to provide all necessary care.
Will students be required to pay for medical visits?
There will be no copays due for the student at the time of service. Services will be billed directly to the student’s insurance plan. Any remaining balance from that will be sent to the responsible party, not billed to the student’s HPU account.
How will my student get prescriptions filled?
There are several pharmacy locations near campus. The HPU Passport Card is accepted at CVS located at 1119 Eastchester Dr. High Point, NC 27265 and 124 Qubein Ave. High Point, NC 27262.
Will Student Health Services take my private health insurance?
We recommend that you call your private health insurance carrier to verify if Novant Health is “in-network” for your plan, even if you live in North Carolina. You can also check the Novant Health website to verify the accepted plans by commercial, PHP and marketplace. When you speak to your health insurance plan representative, let them know that you have a child who is headed off to college. Your representative can inform you of the plan’s requirements for students being seen for health visits while living out of state.
Will my private insurance be billed for laboratory tests performed during an office visit?
Yes. Novant Health partners with LabCorp for any labs that are performed during an office visit. Please check with your private insurance carrier to see if LabCorp is covered under your policy.
If my child needs to go to the hospital from HPU Student Health, which hospital will they be transported to?
In most cases, your student will be cared for at Novant Health Kernersville Medical Center. However, if there is an emergent need, your student will be transported to the nearest hospital facility.
My student has extensive medical treatment through HPU Student Health; will their records be transferred to Novant Health automatically or will I have to request this?
Novant Health will have access to your student’s medical history.
If my student becomes ill on the weekends or after clinic hours, what should they do for the best result?
There are a number of after-hours care options available to students. Students can access online video visits, utilize Novant Health Care Connections telephone triage service, visit one of Novant Health’s local urgent care clinics or visit Novant Health Kernersville Medical Center.
Is there an additional cost associated with online video visits?
Yes, online video visits include a $50 copay for the service.
If a student needs a specialist referral, will transportation be provided?
High Point University provides transportation for emergent issues needing medical attention.
What vaccines and medications are offered at the clinic?
HPU Student Health offers all necessary immunizations. Please discuss any questions about specific medications with the HPU Student Health care team.
Is there a charge to get the flu shot at Student Health Services?
Immunizations will be billed to the student’s insurance plan.
Can weekly allergy shots be administered at the clinic?
