For information about the student health insurance plan offered through the University, visit the Student Insurance page.
We recommend that you call your private health insurance carrier to verify if Novant Health is “in-network” for your plan, even if you live in North Carolina. You can also check the Novant Health website to verify the accepted plans by commercial, PHP and marketplace. When you speak to your health insurance plan representative, let them know that you have a child who is headed off to college. Your representative can inform you of the plan’s requirements for students being seen for health visits while living out of state.

High Point University works with students who have unique needs related to academic, housing, or dining accommodations, or to acute or chronic medical conditions. Students can confidentially share information with the appropriate departments. If you have an identified medical condition that may require additional resources, use the contacts below.
- Mental Health Conditions/Counseling
- Learning Differences/Disabilities Including ADD/ADHD
- Physical and Psychological Disabilities/Housing Accommodations
- Food Allergies/Special Dietary Needs please contact the Hospitality Team at: [email protected]
As most medications used currently to treat ADHD/ADD are controlled substances, getting prescriptions from home medical providers can prove to be challenging for some students. In order to help with this, our medical providers at Student Health Services can assist in prescription refills for some students if certain criteria are met. Due to the known issues with overuse of these controlled prescription medications, exceptions cannot be made to the requirements.
Yes, treatment for allergies is part of the wellness care available at HPU Student Health.
Hours: Tuesdays and Thursdays 8am to 3pm, Fridays 12pm to 3pm

Welcome to High Point University Student Health Services! My name is Leigh Howell, and I am the medical director for HPU Student Health Services. I am a North Carolina native from Wilson, NC. I completed my undergraduate degree in biology at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill and then medical school at ECU Brody School of Medicine. My husband and I completed our family medicine residency at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston Salem, NC. Since finishing my residency training in 2006, I have practiced medicine in the Winston Salem community both in the private practice setting as well as in student health. I joined the Novant Health High Point University Student Health Services team in 2022 and have appreciated partnering with the HPU students to promote health and well-being on campus. When I am not at work, I enjoy spending time with my husband, three sons, and two goldendoodles. I also love being outdoors, reading, and cooking.
Rhys received a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing at The University of Tennessee, Knoxville. She received her Master of Science degree in Family Nurse Practitioner at Carson-Newman College in Jefferson City, Tennessee. She is certified by the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners.
Alicia received a Bachelor of Science degree in Sports Medicine at Guilford College. She is a graduate of the Physician Assistant program at Bowman Gray School of Medicine at Wake Forest University. She is certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants and is licensed by the North Carolina Medical Board. She has practiced locally for 15 years in family medicine, urgent care, and student health before joining our staff in 2013.
Peggy earned her CMA certification from NHA and she previously obtained her phlebotomy certification from Davidson County Community College. She has been with Cornerstone Health Care for over 21 years. Aside from her medical experience, Peggy also has children and several grandchildren, so she understands the importance of taking care of others.
