Assessment Design

Assessment Design: Practical ways to design assessments that measure learning effectively and support all students.

  1. You can provide frequent, formative, non-graded (if possible), personalized feedback throughout the semester.
  2. Utilize Visual Clarity principles for assessments and assignments.
  3. Consider allowing all students the option to choose the most accessible form of assessment for them to show what they have learned (i.e., presentation, paper/online exam, project, paper, etc.).

Encourage fairness, transparency, and reflection in how student learning is reviewed and graded.

  1. Use transparent grading practices—share rubrics, examples, or model responses so expectations are clear and consistent.

  2. Value progress as well as performance—acknowledge growth and improvement over time, not just final outcomes.

  3. Incorporate reflection and self-assessment—invite students to evaluate their own learning and identify effective strategies.

  4. Offer opportunities for revision so feedback becomes a tool for continued learning and mastery.
