Internship for Credit

Internship for Credit

School of Communication students interested in receiving credit for an internship should register for COM 4811: Internship. For every 1 credit hour of COM 4811, the student is required to log 40 hours of internship site work. Thus, 4 credit hours is equivalent to 160 hours of internship site work.

Requirements

Before enrolling in an internship for credit, students must complete a minimum of 60 credit hours and have a minimum 2.5 GPA.

Finding An Internship

Students are responsible for the identification and arrangement of their internships. The Office of Career and Professional Development is a helpful resource for locating and applying for internships. Dr. Nick Buzzelli, the School of Communication’s Internship Coordinator, is also available to answer student questions regarding internships. Students may use search engines to locate internships such as Handshake, Indeed, LinkedIn, and Teamwork Online.

Faculty will ultimately approve the appropriateness of the internship. Internship credit is earned for experiences related to the major and not for just working at any organization. Students have previously interned with a variety of outlets (e.g., ABC News, Bloomberg, CarneyCo, Carolina Core FC, Guilford County, Elements Studio, Fox 8, Haven Marketing, The High Point Enterprise, Duluth Huskies, Mezz Entertainment, Stock Yards, The Game ESPN, The New York Boulders, Tidal Jets, Winston Salem Open, and HPU Athletics).

Registering for COM 4811

Step #1

Once an internship is secured, students should review the Internship Policies and Procedures 2024-2025 and complete the Internship Registration Form.

Be sure to read the following information to make sure that you fill out the form properly:

  • Faculty Supervisor: Dr. Nick Buzzelli is the faculty supervisor for School of Communication internships with the exception of Sport Management majors. If you are a Sport Management major, you can find more information on how to register for SMG 4811 here: Sport Management Internship for Credit
  • Credit Hours: Here you will designate how many credit hours you want to complete during that semester. Each credit hour is the equivalent to 40 internship site hours. You can earn up to 12 credit hours of internship credit. Be sure you have room in your schedule for however many credit hours you decide to add with this internship course.
  • Graded or P/F: The COM 4811 course is graded.

Step #2

Once you have completed the Internship Registration Form, you will email it as a PDF to Dr. Nick Buzzelli. The Faculty Supervisor will then submit it to the Registrar’s Office so that you can be registered for the course. (Faculty will submit the registration forms as a batch, so students might not see the course listed in their schedule for a week or two.)

Step #3

Once you are registered for the course, you will have access to the Blackboard page for the course. Upon access to Blackboard, students will need to complete the following Course Enrollment Materials and submit them appropriately on Blackboard by the due date:

  1. Job Description
  2. Signed Copy of the For-Credit Internship Policy (Signed by Student)
  3. Signed Copy of the Internship Agreement (Signed by Student and Site Supervisor)
  4. Internship Learning Outcomes
  5. Resume
  6. Copy of Unofficial or Official Transcript (Provided Online through Student Planning)
  7. Signed Copy of On-Campus Internship Agreement (Only for Students Completing Internship on HPU’s Campus)

Students are required to submit all required documents by the add/drop date at 5:00 pm. If the paperwork is incomplete as of 5:00 pm, then the student will automatically be dropped from the course.
